Global Learning and Experience

Culturally Enriching Experiences

Do you want to broaden your personal and educational perspectives? Are you interested in traveling? Do you want to experience a particular culture first-hand? The University of North Texas allows you to enjoy life-changing and rewarding experiences while progressing toward your bachelor's or master's degree. Other reasons to take advantage of these opportunities include:

  • Experience a different culture while gaining a better understanding and a new appreciation of it
  • Further develop your communication skills using a foreign language
  • Learn from different professors who can provide wider perspectives on a subject area

Through Global Learning and Experience, you can study overseas or in another part of the United States regardless of your major. Some opportunities can extend for up to one year.

Because you're allowed to use most financial aid and scholarships you normally receive, participating in these programs is comparable to what you pay for your regular UNT courses. More importantly, any approved academic credit you earn while participating in the program can fulfill UNT degree requirements. What we offer Global Learning and Experience administers numerous summer, semester and year-long exchange programs. Some study abroad programs focus on the culture and language of China, France, Germany, Italy, Mexico and Spain. Examples of the many short-term programs include studying:

  • Anthropology and sociology in Mexico
  • Art history in London or Paris
  • Media studies in the United Kingdom
  • Russian and international business in St. Petersburg

We also have study abroad exchange programs with universities in 37 countries in Africa, Asia, Europe and Latin America. Many of the universities offer courses in English, and sometimes courses are taught by one of our faculty members who may accompany the group.

Our participation in the National Student Exchange allows you to choose from nearly 200 colleges and universities in 48 states, as well as Guam, Puerto Rico, the Virgin Islands and Canada. These range from small colleges to large universities and from rural to urban settings. Participants may choose to pay UNT tuition or pay in-state tuition at the host university. Reasons to participate in the National Student Exchange include:

  • Assess an out of state university as a possible site for graduate school
  • Take courses or pursue minors not offered at UNT

Our friendly staff members and your academic advisor can help with the application process and provide any additional guidance.

Application requirements

Many programs do not require proficiency in another language. However, if you plan to study in a foreign language, you need to demonstrate proficiency in the language before applying for that study abroad program.

Global Learning and Experience offers a limited number of International Education Fee Scholarships to help pay for program and travel costs in a study abroad program.
