National Student Exchange

What is National Student Exchange?

The National Student Exchange (NSE) is an exciting program that provides you the opportunity to explore academic offerings and academic life at another participating institution while making progress toward your bachelor’s degree at the University of North Texas. Since 1968, more than 94,000 students have participated in this national program. We joined NSE in 1996.

Through NSE, you may study for up to two semesters at another member institution while remaining enrolled at UNT. You can choose from nearly 200 colleges and universities in 48 states, Guam, Puerto Rico, the Virgin Islands and Canada. These range from small colleges to large universities and from rural to urban settings. With so many options available, you should be able to find a campus with the right combination of courses, facilities and environment to meet your personal and academic needs and interests.

Taking part in NSE

The reasons for deciding to participate in NSE are as varied as the students themselves. Through NSE, you can:

  • travel and live in another part of the nation
  • take courses or pursue minors that are not available at UNT
  • assess an out-of-state university as a possible site for graduate study
  • learn from different professors who can provide wider perspectives on a subject area
  • experience a different culture while gaining a better understanding and a new appreciation of it

Whatever the reason for exchange, you can find academic, career and life-enhancing opportunities through NSE.

You will not have to apply for admission to the host university or pay out-of-state tuition. Available payment options allow you to pay either our tuition and fees or the in-state rate at your host campus. Certain fees and all housing costs are paid to the host institution. Any financial aid or scholarships you have been awarded can be used for this program, unless the rules governing a particular scholarship specify otherwise. The NSE Directory, which is available in room 211 of Chilton Hall or online at www.nse.org, explains each plan and provides information on the costs of participating institutions.

You and your academic advisor will prepare a NSE advising agreement that will list the courses to be taken and how they will count toward your UNT degree plan.
