Dr. Vish Prasad wins Michael P. Malone International Leadership Award from the Association of Public and Land-grant Universities
DENTON (UNT), Texas -- Dr. Vish Prasad, vice president for research and economic development at the University of North Texas, has been selected as a 2011 recipient of the Michael P. Malone International Leadership Award, which is sponsored by the Association of Public and Land-grant Universities (APLU). Prasad was recognized for his success in establishing international research partnerships. He has created dozens of new research collaborations and academic partnerships in more than 40 countries, spanning four continents. Since arriving at UNT in 2007, Prasad led the development of a dual degree master's program between UNT and the Universidad de Magallanes in Punta Arenas, Chile, which has been recognized by the National Science Foundation (NSF), the U.S. Department of State and multiple agencies within the Chilean government. He also led UNT's effort to establish strategic alliances with seven elite research institutions and research centers in three major cities in India: Mumbai, Bangalore, and Chennai. The initiative worked to expand exchange opportunities for faculty members and graduate and post-doctoral students. Prasad was honored by the Greater Dallas Indo-American Chamber of Commerce (GDIACC) in 2010 with a Texas-India Educational Partnership Award for outstanding contributions that facilitate educational exchange between the two countries. "It has been extremely rewarding to create partnerships with educators and researchers, from Chile to China," Prasad says. "A shared base of resources and expertise among international institutions provides wonderful opportunities for student learning, faculty collaboration, cultural exchange, innovation, and technology development. It is an honor to be recognized by the leading organization of American public and land-grant universities for leadership in this area." UNT President V. Lane Rawlins said the award speaks to Prasad's talent in establishing international partnerships and UNT's deep commitment to cultivating a global perspective in learning and research. Rawlins, who knew Michael Malone, said it's also a special honor because of its namesake, a former Montana State University president who worked tirelessly to raise the stature of his institution and APLU. "We are proud of Dr. Prasad's achievements and this special recognition. He has helped UNT to further our reach and impact internationally so that students, faculty, industry and governments alike benefit," Rawlins said. "Thanks to him and many others here at UNT, our university has a strong global presence." A former dean of Florida International University's College of Engineering and Computing, Prasad served as founding consultant and academic sponsor of the Future House USA project, a U.S. industry-supported net-zero-energy building demonstration project inaugurated during the 2008 Beijing Olympics Games and notable for its use of sustainable engineering design and materials. He also helped implement an FIU graduate software program at Beijing University. While at FIU, Dr. Prasad also conceived and co-founded the Latin American and Caribbean Consortium of Engineering Institutions (LACCEI), and served as its first president (2003-04). LACCEI has emerged as the leading organization of Latin American and Caribbean engineering institutions. Established in 2000, the Michael P. Malone International Leadership Awards recognize individuals who have made significant contributions to international education at public and land-grant institutions. The awards are named in honor of Michael P. Malone, president of Montana State University (MSU) from 1991 until his death in 1999. Malone made many contributions to MSU and U.S. higher education through his work as chair of APLU's Commission on International Programs (CIP), where he focused the group's efforts on issues critical to international programs and increased its stature within APLU and elsewhere. Prasad was one of three recipients selected for 2011.
