UNT to celebrate Life Sciences Complex opening and Institute of Applied Science 40th anniversary

DENTON (UNT), Texas -- The University of North Texas will host a series of events to celebrate the opening of the new Life Sciences Complex and the 40th anniversary of the Institute of Applied Science this weekend.

The events will take place Oct. 15 (Friday) and Oct. 16 (Saturday) and will coincide with the UNT Homecoming game against Florida International University and other Homecoming events on Friday and Saturday. All events are free unless otherwise noted.

Life Sciences Complex opening

UNT President V. Lane Rawlins, Texas State Rep. Myra Crownover, R-Lake Dallas, and UNT Chancellor Lee Jackson will host a ribbon-cutting ceremony at 3 p.m. Oct. 16 (Saturday), to celebrate the official opening of the new Life Sciences Complex, located one block east of West Sycamore Street and Avenue C. After the ceremony, the building will be open for tours until 5 p.m.

The four-story, state-of-the-art research facility with 87,000 square feet of space will support and enhance UNT's rapidly growing research in life sciences and be used for biochemistry and molecular biology, developmental physiology, genetics and plant science. The new building, which connects to the existing Biology Building, includes an open atrium space on the first floor with connector bridges on the second and third floors to allow integration of faculty and staff in the current Biology Building with those in the new facility.

The complex includes an aquatics laboratory for the study of a wide range of human health issues and marine conservation issues as well as four climate-controlled rooftop research greenhouses designed for technologically advanced plant science research.

The building is projected to receive gold-level Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design certification from the U.S. Green Building Council, which means the design, construction and operation meet strict environmental standards. This will be UNT's first LEED-certified building to open. Construction on the building began in October 2008.

Institute of Applied Science 40th anniversary

Alumni, faculty and staff, students and community members are invited to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the Institute of Applied Science at UNT with events Oct. 15 (Friday) and Oct. 16 (Saturday) in the Environmental Education Science and Technology Building, located at 1704 W. Mulberry St. (northwest corner of Avenue C and West Mulberry).

The institute's environmental science laboratories will be open for tours from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Oct. 15, and information will be available about the Lewisville Lake Educational Learning Area, an outdoor educational facility. From 2 to 4 p.m., guests may attend two lectures, including one about the evolution of a group of rare birds from the Hawaiian Islands presented by Dr. Heather Lerner of the Smithsonian National Zoological Park.

The Elm Fork Education Center will host a community cycling event, "Pedalpalooza," for children to learn about bicycle safety, maintenance, physics and alternative transportation from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Oct. 16. The fee is $8 per child, with two parents per child admitted for free. In addition, UNT's state-of-the-art Sky Theater will screen a planetarium 3-D show that traces humanity's space exploration at 4 p.m.
