UNT vice president for information technology to retire

DENTON (UNT), Texas -- Maurice Leatherbury, vice president for information technology and chief information officer at the University of North Texas, has announced he will retire Oct. 1.

"We are grateful for Maurice's years of committed service in managing the university's Computing Information and Technology Center," said President V. Lane Rawlins. "He is a recognized leader statewide and his stewardship in developing and implementing UNT's information systems are deeply appreciated."

Leatherbury has served as chair of LEARN, the statewide organization of 36 institutions of higher education in Texas that has developed a high-speed fiber optic network spanning 3,000 miles and linking the state's major higher educational institutions. He also developed and managed the university's Teaching with Technology Grant program and planned the technology infrastructure for the university's System Center at Dallas, among other accomplishments.

Leatherbury joined UNT in 1993 as an assistant professor in the School of Library and Information Sciences. He became senior director of academic computing in 1995. In addition, in 1997 he served as UNT assistant to the associate vice president for computing and communications services.

In 2002, he was named executive director of information technology and academic computing. He then served as associate vice president for computing and chief technology officer from 2005 to 2009 before being named vice president for information technology and chief information officer.

Before joining UNT, he served as assistant professor at the School of Library and Informational Science at the University of Missouri from 1991 to 1993.

Leatherbury also created MetaMicro Library Systems Inc. as a Texas company and served as president from 1979 to 1991. Prior to that, he was the assistant director for systems and research at the Houston Academy of Medicine-Texas Medical Center Library.

He received his bachelor's degree in English from the University of Southwestern Louisiana, a master's degree in library science from Florida State University and a doctoral degree in library and information science from the University of Texas at Austin.
