Frequently Asked Questions

What can I do with a degree from the Department of Materials Science and Engineering?
Jobs are available in small and large companies in research, development, manufacturing, marketing, and materials design and structures. You might work in such industries as aerospace, appliance, automotive, biomedical, communication, computer, construction, forensics, manufacturing, microelectronics, nanotechnology, nuclear, oil and gas, power generation, shipbuilding, or sports. Or you might work in a government laboratory or in another field. Check out our Alumni page to see what our students have done!

I received an admission letter from graduate school. Does that mean that I have admission to the Materials Science and Engineering department?

Admission to graduate school does not  imply admission to the individual department. Our department reviews files comprehensively taking into account, GRE scores, academic transcripts, work history, research interests and recommendation letters

What is an assistantship?

Qualified students opting to do their degree full-time, can apply for departmental assistantships. These assistantships require performance of work and are distinct from scholarships. The assistantships need to be renewed each semester based on performance and availability of funds.

In addition a health insurance package is provided to all research or teaching assistantship students.  Students also receive a waiver of out-of-state tuition (a $2000/semester savings).

A Graduate Teaching Assistantship is defined as salary paid to a Graduate Teaching Assistant employed to carry out various activities at the University (examples of such work include but are not limited to, marking tests, lab assistance, departmental library work, organization of department field trips). The Department of Materials Science typically has 2-4 teaching assistantships available each Fall. It is expected that students awarded a teaching assistantship will interact with a primary designated faculty on arrival at UNT and the department Chairman. Based on performance during the teaching assistantship and potential for research activity complemenatary to available graduate research assistantships, a graduate research assistantship may be awarded on termination of the graduate teaching assistantship. Graduate teaching assistantships $1,400 per month minimum

A Graduate Research Assistantship is defined as salary paid to Graduate Research Assistant employed to perform research duties on behalf of the University. The Department of Materials annually offers between 10-15 graduate research assistanships. Based on research and academic performance, current graduate research assistantships are continued. Graduate research assistantships are $1,400 to $1600 per month

I work in the DFW metroplex and would like to obtain a degree in Materials Science.

Please see the website  for information on different degrees we offer. We have over 10 students currently enrolled in part-time degrees with similar needs to yours. If an advanced degree at a Master’s level is required, many of our part-time students opt for our Problems in lieu of thesis MS degree that does not require a thesis but is a terminal degree. If you would like to pursue a MS, Thesis or a PhD, first complete an application form. After admission, please contact individual faculty that meet your research interests and work out a degree plan. In your covering letter with your application, please inform the graduate advisor that you will be a part time student and therefore not applying for a graduate teaching or research assistantship.

I am interested in 2-3 courses offered by your department but not the entire degree.

You can register for up to 12 hours without pursuing a degree. Please see graduate school for details. Please note however, that you will need approval of the instructor to register for courses in the Department of Materials Science.

If I give you my transcripts, GRE score, TOEFL and letters of recommendation without paying my application fee will you review it?

We have made a department policy to review only those applicants who have paid the application fee.

I have started my Master's in a University and wish to complete it at the Department of Materials Science and Engineering, UNT

You can transfer upto 6 credit hours for an MS degree

How many hours can I transfer for a PhD?

PhD students can transfer 18-24 hours to their PhD program

How many courses will I take when I do an MS?
Please review Current Student information for course requirements

How many courses will I need to do a PhD?

Please review Current Student information for course requirements

Who or what is an advisor?

There are two advisors. The graduate advisor helps you to connect to other faculty members, evaluates applications and ensures that you are meeting the degree requirements. You will also have an academic advisor who will advise you on courses you should take, your research, project etc.

I would like to get a degree in Materials Science and Engineering (MTSE) but the person I would like to work with is not in this department.

We have a large number of students who fall in this category. Materials is a very interdisciplinary area and faculty in other departments also work on materials related research. You can be advised by other professors out of the department while getting a degree in MTSE.

I sent the department all the items on the checklist: Xerox of my GRE, TOEFL (international only), 3 recommendation letters, CV, Statement of purpose (what I hope to achieve by doing a degree in Materials Science and Engineering) and Xerox copies of my transcript. It has been 4 weeks and I have got no admission decision.

For graduate applicants, the admission decision is made within the Academic Department after evaluation and processing within both International Admissions (for international students) and Graduate Admissions.  International admissions and Graduate school require an application form, official GRE/GMAT scores sent by ETS, official transcripts for every degree obtained and a copy of the degree certificate for every degree obtained to process the application.

All documents should be official for International Admissions and Graduate School. If a Xerox copy of the transcripts and degree certificates is obtained, many applicants get a stamp from their Registrar or University official on it. We ask for all information at the department in parallel to your initial application to the University so you can be evaluated by all faculty for possible scholarships and assistantships in the time as early as possible. However, final admission is only enabled once international admissions and/or graduate school have approved the admission.

How can I do the application right for the fastest processing?

Send in your application and all required documents to International Admissions. Gre, TOEFL should be officially sent by ETS to UNT Graduate school, Official transcripts and degree certificate (official original or Xerox stamped by Registrar).

Send a copy of your entire application (see our holistic review criteria) and documents to the Department. (Address: Graduate Admissions, Department of Materials Science and Engineering, 1155 Union Circle #305310, Denton, TX 76203)

International admissions verifies authencity and after the application is complete, sends it to the department for official evaluation. The entire time that international admissions is reviewing your application, the department reviews your application for potential compatibility with assistantships. If you are a part-time student then please let the department know in your cover letter. Part time students do research with a professor.

I got admission from the department and admission to UNT but no I-20. As an international student, I cannot come without it.
Before you can be fully admitted and an I-20 issued to you, additional documents or information to complete your application. Please review your e-mails from international admission to ensure that you have complied with the financial documents.

I have read your holistic criteria. Where does my GRE fit in your department? I have never published a paper. What can I submit?

GRE is one part of what we look at. We are a research centered department so are interested in your research potential. If you have not written a paper for a conference or journal, we encourage you to send a copy of your senior thesis or reports you did during your prior classes.

I have already applied but want to defer to another semester. How do I update my application?

If you need to update an existing graduate application, including changes to the starting semester or year, please use the Toulouse Graduate School form here: http://www.tsgs.unt.edu/admissions/update/unt

I have other concerns and/or questions. Who can I contact for more information?

If your questions could not be answered here or you have other concerns feel free to contact Amy Mayfield, MTSE Student Relations, at 940-369-8486 (940-565-4824 Fax).
