leadership, mentoring & study skills

At the University of North Texas, we are dedicated to helping you reach your academic potential. We offer many programs, services and workshops throughout the year that will help you hone your study and leadership skills or assist in your transition to college. Your success is our top priority.

Study skills

The Learning Center hosts sessions and operates facilities to ensure academic success. These include:

• Peer, volunteer, group and online tutoring
• Reading and study skills labs
• Speed reading training
• Study skills, test taking, time management and note taking workshops

These services are available in addition to what may already be offered by a particular degree program, department, college or school.

Mentoring programs

New experiences await you as you transition from a high school or a community college. We have several mentoring programs that pair incoming students with peers, faculty members and/or staff members. Our mentors can provide referrals to appropriate services, information on academic and student services or general encouragement and motivation. The programs are:

• Buddy System
• Student Success Mentoring Program
• Transfer Ambassadors

The department, college or school that oversees your major may also offer mentoring programs.

Leadership skills

Having strong leadership skills gives you an advantage over others in today's competitive job market. Our Center for Leadership and Services provides many programs and events to build and demonstrate these skills. Other opportunities exist by getting involved in one of our more than 300 student organizations, which include many sororities and fraternities. The programs administered by the center are:

• Building Citizens
• Eagle Transcript
• Emerging Leadership Summit
• LeaderShape Institute Orientation and Transition Programs also manages Class Identity programs that provide leadership opportunities.

How to Enroll at UNT

High School students

We encourage you to fulfill the graduation requirements for the Recommended Program or the Distinguished Achievement Program in high school.

In your junior year, take the SAT or the ACT and have your scores sent to UNT.

In your senior year, apply for admission at www.applytexas.org by March 1 and request that your high school transcript be sent to the UNT admissions office.

Advanced Placement and International Baccalaureate courses can count toward college credit at UNT. For details, visit www.unt.edu/credit.

Transfer students

If you're attending a Texas community college, you should consult our Transfer Articulation web page, the UNT Undergraduate Catalog and an academic counselor/advisor to review your degree plan. Proper planning allows you to receive the maximum amount of transfer credits

Our Transfer Center will help you make a successful transition to college life at UNT by connecting you to a peer mentor and other campus resources. Each year, we welcome more transfer students than any other institution in the state. The center is in the University Union, Room 320. More information is at transition.unt.edu.
