Exhibition highlight: Material Evolution: Ugandan Bark Cloth

UNT Gallery on the Square; March 1 — March 26, 2011

The exhibition presents the work of an international group of artists and designers, who engage with one material: bark cloth. Material Evolution highlights the centuries-old process of making cloth from the bark of mutuba trees in Uganda, Africa—a process that persists in the realm of the handmade and, in the last 20 years, has enjoyed a cultural and commercial resurgence in Uganda and abroad. Working through personal experience with bark cloth, the artists translate this material into a new form, helping to ensure its cultural survival and exploring understanding of what a material can signify.
