Walters was one of the top members of the record-breaking sprint-relay teams at North Texas in the early 1950s.
Walters ran as the lead leg of 440-yard and 880-yard relay teams that were record breaking in 1952. The 440-yard relay team captured the Drake Relays title with a record-breaking time of 41.7 and came back and won the 880-yard relays with another record-setting time of 125.8.
The team also won the Texas and Kansas Relays that year in both the 440 and 880-yard relays. Teamed with legend Ray Renfro, North Texas broke the world record in the 880-yard relay (124.8, since broken) and came close to the world mark in the 440-yard relay.
Walters was a versatile athlete as he was the top broad jumper on the team and eventually had a best mark of 25-feet-8.
