Though small in stature, Bryon Gross was one of the great tacklers in North Texas history.

He is one of only four North Texas players to earn all-conference honors four times, and was also named All-America in 1990. He is the North Texas all-time leader in career tackles with 386.

Gross was also named Academic All-Southland Conference twice while leading the Eagles in tackles three of his four seasons, including a career-best 122 as a senior. He started every game of his career, a span of 46 consecutive games, and played a key role in the Eagles' success from 1987 to 1990 — North Texas finished the 1987 and 1988 seasons ranked 16th and 12th in the NCAA I-AA national rankings.

Gross’s performance and leadership so earned the respect and admiration of his coaches and teammates that the team’s annual football award given to the team's most outstanding linebacker is named after Byron Gross.

In 2013, Gross was named to the North Texas All-Century team.
