North Texas Athletics Hall of Fame
A forward on the Eagles basketball team, he was a two-time captain who earned all-America honors in 1943. That year he helped lead North Texas to a third-place finish at the NAIA national tournament.
After college, Menefee joined the U.S. Marines and fought in World War II. He was part of the American force that invaded Okinawa in 1945. Menefee lost 40 pounds in his three months on Okinawa and was wounded by shrapnel, earning him a Purple Heart. He eventually was promoted to executive officer and then company commander.
Menefee became head basketball coach at Baylor in 1961 and was named the Southwest Conference Coach of the Year in 1965, 1968 and 1969. He was later athletic director at Baylor.
