Billy Maxwell was a three-year letterman in golf who helped North Texas capture three consecutive NCAA championships from 1950 to 1952.

Originally from Abilene, Texas, Maxwell won the 1951 United States Amateur championship, edging Joseph Gagliardi in the match-play final. 

After serving in the U.S. Army, he began a professional golf career in the PGA and Senior PGA tours. Maxwell recorded seven PGA tour victories, including a playoff win at the 1961 Insurance City Open, and had top-five finishes and eight top-10 finishes in the Masters, U.S. Open and PGA Championship. He was on the 1962 Ryder Cup team and was inducted into the Texas Golf Hall of Fame.
