University of North Texas Athletics

To generations who attended Denton High School, Bill Carrico is remembered as Coach Carrico, an assistant coach, assistant principal, and athletic director. But prior to that, he was a stand-out offensive lineman at North Texas.

Carrico began his career at the University of Texas, but, after getting married, moved home to Denton. He considered leaving football behind but decided to play his junior and senior seasons at North Texas, where he was a part of two Missouri Valley Conference championships (1958 and 1959), opening holes for All-Century running back Abner Haynes. Three offensive linemen from those teams were drafted by the NFL, including Carrico, who was selected by the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Carrico was twice named all-Missouri Valley Conference and was a Williamson All-America in 1959.
