DENTON - A turnover by UAB just outside their box in the 56th minute was the difference maker in Friday night's match, as the North Texas soccer team defeated red-hot UAB 1-0 at the Mean Green Soccer Complex.

Mean Green forward Aaliyah Nolan forced the turnover above the Blazers box and then quickly passed it up to freshman Brooke Lampe who scored the eventual game-winner.

"We came at UAB pretty hard from the start," said North Texas head coach John Hedlund. "We outshot our opponent 20-7, but give them credit, they were able to withstand our pressure and keep the score tight throughout the game."

The win keeps North Texas (10-2-2, 5-0-1) right on Rice's heels for the Conference USA standings lead and improves their unbeaten streak to 10 in a row. It also ends UAB's (9-2-3, 3-1-1) unbeaten streak, which headed into Friday also stood at nine in a row - a program-best.

North Texas continued its offensive attack Friday with a flurry of shots.

The Mean Green, who are second in the country in shots per game at 21.69, fired shot after shot in the first half. In the final seconds of the first half, sophomore Dominique James just barely missed her first goal of the year when she struck the crossbar off a corner kick by Katie Gernsbacher.

James, a defender, was again part of a defensive unit that has been outstanding all year.

The Mean Green entered Friday's match giving up an average of .69 goals per match, which is the best in conference and 32nd best in the nation. Friday's shutout is their eighth this season and their fourth in C-USA play.

UAB's seven shot attempts were almost half what they average per game.

"We were a little bit unlucky hitting the crossbar twice, but when we needed a goal freshman Brooke Lampe came through in a big way," Hedlund said. "Our defense, once again, played at a championship level securing the shutout against a very talented UAB team."

Mean Green goalie Brooke Bradley had two saves. She improves her season record to 6-0-2.
