DENTON -- All the evidence pointed to overtime with time winding down and the game tied at 1-1 between North Texas and Florida Atlantic. Amber Haggerty did not want another tie. In the 85th minute, the senior forward delivered with the game-winning goal to give the Mean Green a 2-1 victory against the Owls on Friday night at the Mean Green Soccer Complex.

"FAU played outstanding tonight," said North Texas head coach John Hedlund. "We know we are going to get everyone's best after winning the league last year. Amber came up big for us tonight with the two goals, something we really needed from the offense to secure the win."

Haggerty scored both goals from off the bench for the Mean Green. When Haggerty was on the field, she created opportunities for North Texas. The senior gave North Texas a lead in the first half after taking control of the ball inside the penalty box off a cross. She laced a shot past a diving goalkeeper into the left-hand corner of the net.

FAU took the momentum back briefly right before half after a failed clearance by North Texas led to an Owls goal. Amanda Lodge headed in her first goal of the season off a cross inside the box.

Hedlund calls the Mean Green a second-half team. North Texas peppered the FAU goal with shots right from the start of the second half. Sydney Drinkwater made seven of her nine saves for FAU in the second period.

Haggerty drilled a hard shot at the FAU goal with five minutes left in the game. The shot deflected off an FAU defender but the momentum off the shot carried the ball into the net, giving the Mean Green the lead and the eventual win.
