Mean Green Roll To 20-Point Win

DENTON – North Texas had four different players finish in double figures and shot 52.4% from the three-point line to defeat North Carolina A&T by a score of 80-60 on Tuesday night at The Super Pit.

Umoja Gibson (20), James Reese (13), Javion Hamlet (13), Abdul Mohamed (9) and JJ Murray (1) all set season highs for points scored, while Jahmiah Simmons (6) and Deng Geu (11) tied their season highs. JJ Murray scored his first career point with a free throw in the final minute of the game.

Gibson is the first member of the Mean Green to reach 20 points this season. The redshirt sophomore from Waco scored 17 consecutive points for North Texas in a 3 minute, 51 second span during the second half.

"We needed this one," head coach Grant McCasland said. "It took us a little bit to get going offensively. It was sluggish early. But you could tell that the better the ball moved, the better we played."

The Mean Green (2-3), who entered the night averaging 57.3 points per game, also knocked down a season-high 11 three-pointers and scored 80 points for the first time this season.

"I didn't even see Mo last year," Reese said. "But when he plays like that, he can take us very far. If he plays like that, it will just boost everybody else up on the same level. If he keeps doing that, the sky is the limit."

With both teams struggling to score early on, Hamlet found Simmons under the rim, who laid in the basket despite being fouled. Simmons drained the free throw to convert the three-point play and sparked a 10-0 run that put the Mean Green ahead of the Aggies (1-4) 15-9 midway through the first half.

UNT ramped up its Conference USA leading defense to hold A&T to 28.6% shooting in the first half. The Mean Green didn't relinquish a field goal in the final five minutes of the first half to take a 12-point lead into the break.

After another slow start to the second half, Mohamed knocked down his second three-pointer of the season. Just 31 seconds later, Reese hit back-to-back shots from beyond the arc to give North Texas a 44-29 advantage.

The Mean Green would go on to make five consecutive three-point shots in the second half, capping off an impressive performance from downtown.

"The game opened up for us in transition," McCasland said. "We haven't opened the floor up like that this year. You can tell our team is learning each other as they play. Sometimes the ball isn't moving quite like it needs to, but when it does, it's very obvious that our guys have what it takes to be good."

The Mean Green will travel to Montego Bay, Jamaica, this weekend to continue the Jersey Mike's Jamaica Classic. North Texas is scheduled to play Rhode Island on Friday at 3:30 p.m. before a Sunday afternoon matchup with No. 15 Utah State.
