Matt Montayne brings a wealth of experience as North Texas’ goalkeeper coach. In what will be his second stint with UNT, Montayne has helped the Mean Green capture five regular-season titles, two conference tournament championships and two trips to the NCAA Tournament.
Montayne begins his second-stint at UNT in 2018, his eighth season with the program overall.
In 2016, Montayne mentored two goalkeepers in Brooke Bradley and Miranda Schoening. Bradley started the first half of the season, earning two Conference USA Goalkeepers of the Week honors before missing the rest of the season with an injury.
Montayne turned to Schoening, a freshman, and in her first career start, recorded a win and shutout against Western Kentucky. She went on to receive a C-USA Goalkeeper of the Week award and posted a season record of 8-2.
Montayne coached the program's greatest goalkeeper, Jackie Kerestine, her entire career at North Texas. Over the course of her career, she became the most decorated goalkeeper at North Texas and will go down in the record books as one of the top players in school history. Kerestine has set nearly every single goalkeeping record at North Texas, including all the career records.
Kerestine capped her career in 2015 by being named first-team all-conference after breaking her own single-season school records in wins (19) and shutouts (15). She was named Conference USA Goalkeeper of the Week five times, named defensive MVP of the Conference USA Championship, and named the Las Vegas Invitational's Most Outstanding Player and Defensive Player. She was ranked first in the conference and ranked in the top five nationally in G.A.A., shutouts and save percentage.
In 2014, Montayne mentored Kerestine to one of the best single seasons by a North Texas goalkeeper. The redshirt junior goalkeeper came back stronger than ever from a knee injury suffered the year before.
In 2014, Kerestine set a conference and single-season school record with a 0.51 goals-against average. She also led the conference the entire season in GAA, save percentage and shutouts. The 14 shutouts was also a single-season school record. She also went on to set career records at North Texas in shutouts, saves and wins.
Kerestine was honored with second-team all-conference honors, four Conference USA Defensive Player of the Week awards and was named to the C-USA All-Tournament Team in 2014.
In 2013, Montayne tutored Hailey Riley in goal after Kerestine went down with a knee injury. Riley went on to receive two Conference USA Defensive Player of the Week awards and played in the conference championship game. Montayne also helped coach the C-USA Defensive Player of the Year Kelsey Hodges.
In 2011, Montayne helped North Texas goalkeepers tie a single-season school record with 11 shutouts, which were instrumental to winning the Sun Belt Conference title. As a team, North Texas posted the second-best goals against average in school history, and ranked 23rd in the nation in GAA.
Montayne has been a goalkeeper instructor since 2007. He is currently the Regional Associate Director of NO.1 Soccer Camps. He has trained a number of goalkeepers in the DFW area with a high success rate from beginner, club, ECNL, high school, college and professional. He is currently sponsored by Elite Sport USA Goalkeeping brand. Matt has earned his NSCAA Goalkeeping level I, II and III diplomas, as well as his Advanced National goalkeeping license.
As a player, Montayne was a standout keeper, helping lead Richland College to the 2003 NJCAA National Championship. He played one year in the PASL (Indoor Soccer) for the Rockwall Raptors. Montayne was a member of the ODP pool, and was a two-time All-District selection at Naaman Forest High School. He won a gold medal for Flame United in the junior championships Prague, Czech Republic.
Montayne is a 2011 graduate of Midwestern State University.
