DENTON — For the second time in as many games in the young season, the North Texas soccer team held its opponent shotless. 

The Mean Green beat Texas Southern 5-0 Sunday afternoon at home to improve to 2-0 on the year. UNT outscored its first two opponents on the schedule by a combined score of 12-0 and has not given up a shot in the 180 minutes of combined game action.

"It was a very good team win," said freshman midfielder Michelle Gonzalez who scored her first career goal on Sunday. "To have so many different people scoring shows that we're a very deep team and tactical team. We know we can still get better though."

Gonzalez scored North Texas' final goal on Sunday, chipping the keeper in the 88th minute to put the score at 5-0. The freshman from Garland had two assists on Thursday in UNT's 7-0 win over Northwestern State. Junior Anslsey Bunger assisted on the goal to Gonzalez. It is her first career assist at UNT. 

Fellow freshman Mackenzie Stricklin also scored her first career goal on Sunday. The Heath, Texas native karate kicked a cross from senior Madeline Guderian for the goal that put UNT up 3-0 late in the first half. 

The assist is Guderian's second this season and gives her seven over the past 13 matches dating back to last season. She had zero in her first 49 matches of her career prior to this current stretch. 

North Texas' other three goals on Sunday were scored by people who also scored in the season opener on Thursday.

The Mean Green got Sunday's match rolling in fifth minute when junior Logan Bruffett scored off of a pass from redshirt junior Brittnye Lawson. Bruffett now has two goals on the year. She had two goals all of last year. The assist was the first of Lawson's career.

UNT took a 2-0 lead in the 37th minute when freshman and Denton native Taylor Hunter fired a shot from roughly 40 yards out over the unexpected keeper's head into the back of the net. The goal is the defensive centerback's second goal this season. Last year, senior Carissa Sanders led the defense in goals witch just two. 

"It's great playing in front of your hometown, close to your family and with a program that has high expectations," Hunter said. "You're of course excited coming here and also performing well because of the expectations."

After Stricklin gave UNT a 3-0 lead right before half, junior Berklee Peters scored her third goal of the year. It came off of a throw in from classmate Brooke Lampe. Peters, who is the program's active leading career goal scorer with now 14 goals, already has half as many goals this year as she had all of last year. 

In their first two games of the season, the Mean Green have dominated inside the 18-yard box. Forty-five percent of their touches on Sunday came within the attacking fourth of the field. In the season-opener on Thursday it was 35 percent. 

The Mean Green's seven-goal performance on Thursday and five-goal performance on Sunday both would have been season highs a season ago in a year when UNT was ranked in the top 25 in the nation. 

North Texas has seen eight different players score a goal in its first two games of the 2019 season. They had just 12 register a goal all of last year. 

North Texas next hosts Houston Baptist this coming Friday for a 7 p.m. kick-off. UNT has beaten HBU two years in a row.
