DALLAS – The North Texas women's golf team opened its 2019-20 season on Monday by playing 36 holes at the Trinity Forest Invitational and will now enter the final 18 holes on Tuesday within striking distance of a tournament championship and an individual title.
 
The Mean Green were tied for the lead after the opening round on Monday and now sit in second place at 6-over par – two shots up on Colorado and Baylor and nine shots back of first-place Oklahoma State.
 
Senior Lauren Cox is in second place on the individual leaderboard and is just two shots back of Colorado's Kirsty Hodgkins for the lead after shooting a 68-72 to enter the final round at 4-under par.
 
"We are satisfied with our start at Trinity Forest," UNT coach Michael Akers said. "We are in a position to win with 18 to play, and that is right where we want to be. Lauren really played well in Round 1, and we had four consistent scores in the afternoon round. We are excited to compete tomorrow and try to go low."
 
Cox had seven birdies on the day, including five in the first round, while teammate Katie Finley, a sophomore transfer from Texas A&M, had six birdies on the day, including four in the first round. She is tied for 15th after two rounds and one shot up on teammate Audrey Tan, who matched Cox's seven birdies and is 4-over and tied for 18th. Cox led the field in pars and Par 4 scoring average.
 
The Mean Green will tee off Tuesday at 8:30 a.m., in a shotgun start, and are looking for their first team title since 2010-11 and first individual crown since 2012-13. UNT will be paired with leader Oklahoma State and Colorado.
