CARROLLTON – The North Texas men's golf team began play on Sunday at the second annual Maridoe Intercollegiate on its home course, the Maridoe Golf Club.
The Mean Green are in second place behind 36th-ranked SMU after the first day of competition with Round 2 scheduled for Monday and the completion of the tournament set for Tuesday.
Sophomore
Lenny Bergsson is tied for fourth at even-par and had the highlight of the day when he fired a hole-in-one on the 170-yard Par-3 14th hole. Freshman
Zak Karkaletsos and redshirt junior
Kristof Ulenaers are both tied for seventh at 1-over par, and junior
Viktor Forslund is tied for 15th at 2-over. Freshman
Robert Garcia is tied for 21st at 3-over par. Ulenaers led the field in Par 4 scoring and was 2-under on the day on Par 4s.
"I'm proud of how the team battled today," UNT head coach
Brad Stracke said. "Lenny had a great day today, too, along with a hole-in-one!"
North Texas is five shots up on third-place Arkansas State, ranked 35th in the country, and six shots up on No. 13 Texas A&M, which sits in fourth entering the second day of play.
The Mean Green will tee off Monday, starting at 9:40 a.m., with Garcia, in 10-minute increments ending with Bergsson, who is scheduled to begin play at 10:20. They will be paired with SMU and Arkansas State.
