Defense Propels Mean Green past Xavier (La.)

DENTON – North Texas tied the program record for fewest points allowed in a 68-31 win over Xavier (La.) on Wednesday night at The Super Pit.

The Mean Green (2-2) held the Gold Nuggets to 24% shooting from the field and 13% shooting in the second half. Xavier only made two field goals in the final 22 minutes of the game.

"I just told the team that our job now is to be consistent," head coach Jalie Mitchell said. "We really have to level off and show up no matter who we play. We are us and we give ourselves the best chance to succeed when that's the case."

Freshman forward Destinee McDowell provided a nice spark off the bench with 11 points and nine boards. The Fort Worth native also had eight steals, which is tied for the third most in school history with current head coach Jalie Mitchell, Regina Woods, Partice Purvey and Loryn Goodwin.

Anisha George recorded her third double-double of the season with 15 points and 10 rebounds. George was perfect in the first half, making all four of her shots from the field while sinking her only free throw attempt.

"We had three very tough, intense practices," George said. "We're still trying to find our identity and be consistent. Our goal is to keep playing like we played tonight and improve our mistakes."

The Gold Nuggets committed 21 turnovers, which resulted in 27 points for the Mean Green.

Summer Jones scored a season high eight points, while N'Yah Boyd (5), Madison Townley (6) and Trena Mims (7) all set a season high in points.

After struggling to score to start the game, North Texas made three of their last four shots in the first period to take a 14-12 lead after the first quarter.

At the beginning of the second period, North Texas went on a 12-0 run to take a 26-14 lead.

North Texas outscored Xavier 37-9 in the second half to pull away from the Gold Nuggets. Sixty-eight points is the most the Mean Green have scored in a game this year.

The Mean Green outrebounded the Gold Nuggets by 16 and scored 14 second chance points.

"We got the looks we needed when we were patient," Mitchell said. "I thought we were way more patient and selective with our shots. We gave ourselves more opportunities on the glass, which I feel like this team should be able to do every night. Every single person contributed to this win."

North Texas will be back in action next Tuesday, Nov. 26, at 5 p.m. for a road showdown with CSU Bakersfield (2-3).
