The passing of Dr. Norval Pohl

The University of North Texas received news on the morning of Wednesday, May 13, regarding the recent loss and passing of Dr. Norval Pohl. Dr. Pohl passed away, comfortably, in his sleep, at his home in the Phoenix valley area following six weeks of unsuccessful immune-system study treatments in an aggressive ongoing battle against pancreatic cancer.

Dr. Pohl was appointed the 13th president of UNT in October, 2000. During his time as president, the student population grew from 27,000 to more than 32,000 students. Among his many accomplishments as UNT's leader, Dr. Pohl is most recognized for the fulfillment of UNT’s long held ambition to initiate a College of Engineering, as well as the acquisition of the Liberty Christian School property to address Title IX issues in UNT’s Intercollegiate Athletic Program and the significant addition of both athletic and academic space for the university.

Memorial information for the UNT family will be forthcoming. There is an upcoming memorial service on the campus of Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University in Prescott, AZ where Dr. Pohl has served as the chancellor since July, 2007. Dr. Pohl's family is establishing a memorial scholarship at Embry-Riddle in his name. In lieu of flowers or cards, they request that all donations and memorials for him be given to it through a contact with Steven.Bobinsky@erau.edu, (928) 777-4210.

Please keep Dr. Pohl's family in your thoughts and prayers.
