The Department of Art Education/Art History offers the BA degree with majors in art history and interdisciplinary art and design studies, and the BFA degree with a major in visual arts studies. The MA degree is offered with majors in art history and art education. The PhD is offered with a major in art education. Students interested in these degrees may contact the department chair.
The mission of the Department of Art Education/Art History in the College of Visual Arts and Design is to enhance students' understanding of contemporary and past visual art forms. The department is committed to excellence in teaching and research. Within and between its two comprehensive degree-granting programs, the department provides students and faculty with the opportunity to examine global artistic production, relevant technologies, critical methods, learning theories, and innovative approaches to pedagogy and knowledge acquisition.

General Degree Requirements
Candidates for the Bachelor of Arts with a major in art history or interdisciplinary art and design studies must meet the following requirements.
1. Hours Required and General/College Requirements: A minimum of 120 total semester hours, 42 of which must be advanced, and fulfillment of degree requirements for the Bachelor of Arts degree as specified in the “General University Requirements” in the Academics section of this catalog and the College of Visual Arts and Design requirements.
2. Major Requirements: Completion of at least 48 hours of art to include ART 1200, 2350, and 2360; plus the following courses, according to major:
Art History
AEAH 4800 and 4848; 3 hours of art history from each of the following four categories: Category 1 (AEAH 4802, 4803, 4804, 4805, 4820 or 4821), Category 2 (AEAH 4806, 4807, 4808 or 4809), Category 3 (AEAH 4810, 4811, 4812, 4813, 4816 or 4817), Category 4 (AEAH 4818, 4819, 4822, 4823, 4824 or 4825); 9 additional advanced hours of art history; 6 hours of studio art; 6 hours of art elective; foreign language (preferably French or German) through the sophomore year (2040-2050). With approval from a student's art history mentor, AEAH 4801 may be taken for a category requirement, provided the topic fits within the category being substituted.
As well as those cited above, advanced art history courses include the following: AEAH 4814, Theories of Contemporary Art; AEAH 4815, Twentieth-Century Architecture and Interiors; AEAH 4842, History of Communication Design; AEAH 4843, History of Photography; AEAH 4844, History of Prints; and AEAH 4940, Understanding Art Museums.
Interdisciplinary Art and Design Studies
ART 1440, 1450, 1500, 1510; 6 hours from two of the following: ADES 1500, ADES 1550, ADES 1625, ASTU 2050, ASTU 2120, ASTU 2150, ASTU 2200, ASTU 2210, ASTU 2250, and ASTU 2300; 6 hours from two of the following: ART 3170, ART 4175, AEAH 4940 and PHIL 3100; 3 hours of art history from each of the following four categories: Category 1 (AEAH 4802, 4803, 4804 or 4805; 4801 with faculty approval), Category 2 (AEAH 4806, 4807, 4808 or 4809; 4801 with faculty approval), Category 3 (AEAH 4810, 4811, 4812 or 4813; 4801 with faculty approval), Category 4 (AEAH 4818, 4819, 4820, 4821, 4822, 4823, 4824 or 4825; 4801 with faculty approval).
3. Other Course Requirements:
Art History - none.
Interdisciplinary Art and Design Studies - 6 hours from two of the following: ANTH 3100; COMM 3120, 4260; JOUR 3020, 3700, 4250; RTVF 3450, 3470, 3475; and SOCI 4600. Note: some external courses have prerequisites and are only open to students minoring in those disciplines.
4. Minor Requirements:
Art History - A minimum of 18 hours, of which 6 must be advanced, from a field outside the College of Visual Arts and Design. The art history faculty strongly recommends that students minor in French or German because most graduate schools require knowledge of these languages.
Interdisciplinary Art and Design Studies - Students must pursue a minor outside of the College of Visual Arts and Design. The following minors are strongly recommended: anthropology, journalism, language, history (including area studies minors) and sociology.
5. Electives: Hours required for electives may vary based on course selection and the University Core Curriculum Requirements. Electives may be required to satisfy the advanced hour requirement (42) and/or the minimum total hours required for the degree. For specific information see an academic advisor in the College of Visual Arts and Design Student Services Office, Art Building, Room 111.
6. Other Requirements:
Candidates for the Bachelor of Fine Arts degree with a major in visual arts studies must meet the following requirements.
1. Hours Required and General/College Requirements: A minimum of 123 total semester hours of which 42 must be advanced, and fulfillment of degree requirements for the Bachelor of Fine Arts degree as specified in the “General University Requirements” in the Academics section of this catalog and the College of Visual Arts and Design requirements.
2. Major Requirements: Completion of at least 66 hours of art and 21 hours of professional development to include: ART 1200, 1440, 1450, 1500, 1510, 2350 and 2360; ASTU 2200, 2210 or 2417, 2300, 2350; 3 hours from ASTU 2050, 2130, 2150; AEAH 3753, 3770, 4760, 4770 or 4790; 9 advanced hours of art history; 3 advanced hours of art electives; and 3 hours of art electives. In addition to the above courses, AEAH 4750 and AEAH 4780 must be taken as part of the professional development sequence. The major in visual arts studies prepares students to teach art in public schools. Students must meet state certification requirements and all general requirements specified by the College of Education.
Teacher certification requirements were under review by the State Board for Educator Certification at the time this catalog went to press. Contact the Department of Teacher Education and Administration for current information.
3. Other Course Requirements: For a list of required education courses, see an academic advisor in the College of Visual Arts and Design Student Services Office (Art Building, Room 111) or the College of Education Student Advising Office (Matthews Hall, Room 105).
4. Minor Requirements: No minor is required.
5. Electives: Hours required for electives may vary based on course selection and the University Core Curriculum Requirements. Electives may be required to satisfy the advanced hour requirement (42) and/or the minimum total hours required for the degree. For specific information see an academic advisor in the College of Visual Arts and Design Student Services Office, Art Building, Room 111.
6. Other Requirements:
Any instructor in the College of Visual Arts and Design has the right and responsibility to refer any student to the Admission, Review and Retention (ARR) Committee if that instructor has a concern about a visual art studies/art education student's academic progress, behavioral characteristics or communication skills that indicate potential problems in school settings. The ARR Committee reviews referrals made by faculty and determines a course of action. The ARR Committee also reviews student appeals and determines an appropriate course of action regarding changes in the student's course of study. For detailed information pertaining to the ARR process, refer to the departmental web site.
A minor in art consists of at least 18 hours, including at least 6 advanced hours. At least 9 hours must be completed at UNT. A minor in art history requires the following course sequence:
ART 1200, 2350 and 2360; 9 hours of 3000- or 4000-level art history.
The department offers degree programs leading to the Master of Arts with majors in art education and art history and the Doctor of Philosophy with a major in art education. For complete information, consult the Graduate Catalog.
