Students in the Frank W. Mayborn Graduate Institute of Journalism may apply for graduate assistantships, which provide paid opportunities to work closely with faculty and get published in one of the institute’s literary offerings.
Degree Programs
The Mayborn School of Journalism is among the elite journalism programs that have earned national accreditation by the Accrediting Council on Education in Journalism and Mass Communications. Only about one-fourth of all journalism and mass communications programs in the United States are accredited by this organization.
Bachelor’s degree programs: Your story starts here
In the Mayborn School of Journalism, you’ll learn how to communicate and tell stories relevant to society’s needs. Technological advances allow information to be delivered faster than ever before using many different media. Our students are prepared to become part of this rapidly changing field.
Bachelor of Arts in Journalism
- Advertising: You can work in an advertising agency or an in-house advertising department for a corporation, as an account planner, manager, social media specialist, an art director or copywriter.
- Broadcast and Digital Journalism: You can become a television news anchor or reporter, or work behind the scenes in television news as a writer, editor, producer, camera operator or social media manager.
- Digital and Print Journalism: Our graduates of this concentration produce content for newspapers, magazines, online and social media.
- Photojournalism: Our graduates of this concentration take photos and produce videos for newspapers, magazines, online and social media.
- Public Relations: You can work in community relations, consumer relations and marketing communication, or media relations and publicity for corporations, nonprofit organizations, public relations firms and trade associations.
Sports Journalism Certification and Teacher Certification options also are available to students pursuing their bachelor’s degree.
Graduate degree programs: The next level of excellence
The Frank W. Mayborn Graduate Institute of Journalism offers the only nationally accredited professional Journalism master’s degree program in Texas, Oklahoma, New Mexico and Arkansas. Students can specialize in print and broadcast news, photojournalism, integrated marketing communications, publishing and more.
Mayborn graduate students also can pursue an Interdisciplinary Information Science Ph.D., which focuses on the increasing role of information technologies in individual, social, economic and cultural affairs.

The Mayborn Literary Nonfiction Conference
The annual The Mayborn Literary Nonfiction Conference is a top national forum for writers, journalists, readers and students that focuses on enhancing the quality of nonfiction writing and creating a community of narrative storytellers. The conference hosts some of the nation’s top nonfiction writers and editors each year.
Ten Spurs
Ten Spurs is an annual literary journal produced by the Mayborn Graduate Institute of Journalism featuring winners from the conference’s writing contests, many of whom are graduate students and alumni.
Mayborn Magazine
Mayborn magazine gives graduate students star billing alongside professionals such as National Book Award winner Bob Shacochis and Pulitzer finalist Kelley Benham, sharing stories about how writers create a narrative world from today’s headlines.
