Overview
On June 1, 2015, Gov. Greg Abbott signed Senate Bill 11, which has been called “campus carry,” into law. Starting Aug. 1, 2016, the law allows licensed holders to carry a concealed handgun on public university campuses, including the University of North Texas.
The law also allows universities to create an implementation policy with reasonable rules and regulations. UNT President Neal Smatresk and the UNT Campus Carry Task Force created a policy from student, faculty and staff feedback.

Important Dates
Sept. 11, 2015
President Smatresk convenes UNT’s Campus Carry Task Force.
December 2015
UNT’s campus carry task force recommends policies and guidelines to President Smatresk for review.
January 2016
House Bill 910 allowing Texas licensed handgun owners to “open carry” takes effect Jan. 1. However, individuals still may not “open carry” on university campuses.
President Smatresk makes UNT's campus carry policy draft available to campus and the comment period opens for feedback on the draft policy.
February 2016
Comment period closes Feb. 8 for the final policy draft.
UNT System Board of Regents convenes and reviews UNT campus policy for approval and/or revisions.
Aug. 1, 2016
