Date Announced for 15th Annual Provincetown Jazz Festival

The 15th Annual, 2019 Provincetown Jazz Festival will be held on Thursday, August 15, 7:00pm at The Crown & Anchor in Provincetown and on Monday, August 19, 7:30pm at the Cotuit Center for the Arts, both located on Cape Cod, Massachusetts. 

Since 2005, the Provincetown Jazz Festival has presented jazz musicians from the United States, Canada, Brazil, United Kingdom, Switzerland, Australia, New Zealand, and Japan.

Presenting two internationally acclaimed jazz musicians:

- Katie Thiroux (bass & vocals) with Kevin Harris (piano), Jeremy Turgeon (trumpet), and Bart Weisman (drums)

- Kevin Harris (piano) with Max Ridley (bass) and Lee Fish (drums).

 This year we will feature nine jazz musicians making their Provincetown Jazz Festival debuts:

Jessica Curran is a jazz-pop vocalist, composer, arranger and lyricist. Jessica is a graduate of the University of North Texas and the Royal College of Music in Stockholm. Jessica has appeared with the Cape Symphony, shared the stage with Bobby McFerrin and some of her most notable venues include Stockholm's Concert Hall, Bass Performance Hall in Fort Worth (TX), Andy's Jazz Club in Chicago, and Scullers Jazz Club in Boston. Upon the completion of her first North American Tour in 2017, Jessica set off to explore the rhythms of South America, where she developed a large following in Southern Brazil. Jessica will be accompanied by Fabiano de Castro from Brazil on piano, Ron Ormsby on bass, and Bart Weisman on drums.

Henry Acker is a fourteen-year-old gypsy jazz guitarist in the style of Django Reinhardt and with abilities far beyond his years. After playing for only five years, he has already shared the stage with jazz greats Bucky Pizzarelli, Frank Vignola, Julian Lage and Andreas Oberg as well as Gypsy Jazz legends Samson Schmitt, Mozes Rosenberg, Adrien Moignard, Joscho Stephane, Olli Soikkeli, Gonzalo Bergara, and Jason Anick. He is the winner of the 2017 Djangofest North West Saga Award and a two-time winner of the Downbeat Magazine Student Award for jazz guitar soloist. Based In Boston, MA, he has dazzled audiences at Jazz Festivals across the United States. Henry will be accompanied by his father Victor Acker on guitar and his uncle Dana Acker on the double bass - both Berklee College of Music alumni. All three are making their festival debuts.

Katie Thiroux is based in Los Angeles and has garnered considerable attention for her bravura bass playing, assured singing, compelling compositions and in the words of music icon Quincy Jones, “This girl is IT!”  Her most recent album, “Off Beat,” was awarded a “Best Album Of 2017” by Downbeat Magazine and released her debut album, "Introducing Katie Thiroux" in 2015. Coming from a musical family in Los Angeles, Katie studied bass and explored both jazz and classical vocal styles and began studying privately with jazz vocalist Tierney Sutton at the age of 12. In 2006 she was awarded the Phil Ramone Presidential Scholarship to Berklee College of Music and after graduation, Katie returned home to Los Angeles and completed a Masters of Jazz Bass from California State University of Long Beach on full scholarship. In addition to leading her own group, Katie has appeared with Patti Austin, Ken Peplowski, Larry Fuller, Jeff Clayton, Geri Allen, Tamir Hendelman, Terri Lyne Carrington, Lewis Nash, Jeff Hamilton, and many more. Katie has performed at jazz festivals in the United States, Mexico, Germany, Finland, Serbia, Singapore, and Switzerland as both a leader and a sideman. Katie will be accompanied by Kevin Harris on piano, Jeremy Turgeon on trumpet who is making his festival debut, and Bart Weisman on drums.

Kevin Harris is a New York/Boston based pianist who plays a distinctive combination of traditional and contemporary music and has collaborated with Avishai Cohen, Eddie Gomez, Duane Eubanks, Jason Palmer, Jerry Bergonzi, Ralph Peterson, George Garzone, Terri Lyne Carrington, and many more. National and International appearances include: New York City, Chicago, Boston, Denmark, Italy, Peru, Cuba, Panama, Seoul, Jerusalem, and Tel Aviv, to name a few. As a leader, Kevin has released five albums and DownBeat defines some of Harris’ compositions as “overall smart, lyrical and engrossing.” Kevin is an internationally in demand clinician and is also on the piano faculty at Berklee College of Music. Kevin will be accompanied by Max Ridley on bass and Lee Fish on drums, all three making their festival debuts.

Tickets are $30.00 per concert and a portion of the proceeds from the festival are donated to Jazz in the Schools Program on Cape Cod and other worthy causes.
