By choosing music education as your major, you will be prepared for a career as a professional music teacher. UNT's music education degree program leads to Texas teacher certification in all-level music, opening an array of employment options. Teaching is an exciting and fulfilling career choice for those interested in blending musicianship and teaching skills. Music educators enjoy the process of providing musical experiences that lead to a better understanding and appreciation of music. To be a music teacher, you must not only be an accomplished musician, but also be interested in the art of teaching.

As a Texas certified music educator, you may teach instrumental or vocal music at the elementary or secondary level. With a bachelor's degree in music education from UNT, you could work as an elementary music specialist or as a middle school/high school band, choir, or orchestra director.

Student Spotlight

Graduate Student: Justin West

"I have been fortunate to study with faculty who are not only world-class educators, musicians, and scholars in their own regard, but whose deep care for students and passionate commitment to teaching and learning are made manifest daily. We are taught in the Division to be reflective practitioners, deep thinkers, rigorous researchers, and most importantly, servant leaders. Empowered by my work at UNT, I can enter the field securely, ready to help shape the future of our profession. "

Undergraduate Student: Claire Majerus

"The Music Education Division is an absolutely invaluable component of the UNT College of Music, and one of which I am proud to be a member. The division is full of phenomenally talented and kind-hearted faculty members who have worked with me to hone my teaching skills and to help me achieve each of my goals. I am amazed at the multitude of valuable teaching opportunities I have as a member of the Music Education Division. From instrument petting zoos with the North Texas Music Educators Association, to teaching in a full beginning band program through Start Up The Band, I have had the opportunity to teach and interact with children since my first semester at UNT. My wonderful music education classes have provided me with many other additional opportunities to observe in schools and practice my teaching skills. I enjoy the hard work it takes to be successful in my classes because I know the Music Education faculty are preparing me to be an outstanding music educator. After graduation, I will carry my North Texas degree with confidence and pride, knowing I am prepared for what lies ahead in my career."
