for the laboratory of Dr. Lee Hughes, Associate Professor of Biology at
the University of North Texas.My research interests include microbiology and science education. In the microbiology lab, I study bacteriophage that infect members of the bacterial order Actinomycetales, in particular members of the genus Streptomyces. As part of my efforts, I lead UNT's implementation of the Science Education Alliance - Phage Hunters Advancing Genomics and Evolutionary Science (SEA-PHAGES) program. Through this program, undergraduate students isolate bacteriophage that contribute to my ongoing laboratory research with my graduate students.
In my science education research, I am examining early research experiences for undergraduate students in biology and innovative teaching strategies such as blended learning or online learning in undergraduate biology courses. In a related project, I am collaborating with several other UNT science and mathematics faculty on the National Science Foundation-funded FOCUS Scholarships Program for undergraduate students majoring in the sciences and math at UNT. I also served as the Program Director of UNT"s 2010 HHMI Science Education Grant. and continue to work with programs that were begun under that grant.
