Graduate Admissions

The department offers a Master of Science degree with concentration areas in Construction Management, in Electrical Systems, in Engineering Management, and in Mechanical Systems, and conducts a holistic approach in admitting students to succeed in our graduate engineering technology programs. Applicants that meet a set of requirements listed below are admitted unconditionally. Other applicants may be fully admitted to the program after completing a set of conditions particular to the applicant and the concentration area.

The successful applicant to engineering technology (ET) programs is interested in further developing (i) a technical core to conduct applied research in ET led primarily by immediate engineering problems that industry faces; and (ii) professional skills for advancing to engineering and management positions in industry. Applied research in ET entails the systematic application of advanced science, engineering, and mathematics to synthesize a solution to a problem of industrial relevance using known or emerging technology. “Technology” refers to (i) any physical equipment, artifact, or hardware tool utilized in an engineering field (for example any device, instrument, machine, sensor/transducer/actuator, data acquisition/processing card, and materials); (ii) any software-based engineering simulation, analysis, or design tool; or (iii) any engineering design technique, process or algorithm described in a textbook, a patent, or any other scholarly or trade publication.

Performance indicators leading to unconditional admission include:

  1. A cumulative GPA of 3.0 or better from an ABET accredited B.S. in engineering technology or B.S. in engineering program. Applicants holding a math, science, or architecture degree may also be admitted after completing a set of background courses from the relevant concentration area with an average of “B” or better. The set of courses required will be decided in consultation with an adviser and based on the individual applicant background.
  2. The GRE is waived for applicants holding an ABET accredited bachelor’s degree. The department views the following scores as positive indicators of potential success in the indicated programs:
    • Electrical Systems and Mechanical Systems
      • GRE Quantitative score of 600 or higher (>148 on the new scoring scale)
      • GRE Verbal score of 400 or higher (>146 on the new scoring scale)
      • GRE verbal plus quantitative score of 1000 or higher (>294 on the new scoring scale)
    • Construction Management and Engineering Management
      • GMAT combined score of 500 or higher
      • GRE Quantitative score of 500 or higher (>144 on the new scoring scale)
      • GRE Verbal score of 500 or higher (>153 on the new scoring scale)
      • GRE verbal plus quantitative score of 1000 or higher (>297 on the new scoring scale)
  3. Additional desirable attributes include professional licenses and certifications, and relevant industrial experience in engineering, construction, or management. Applicants should include proper documentation in their application.
  4. International applicants must meet the requirements for English proficiency by doing one of the following:
    • Completion of Level 6 of Intensive English Language Institute
    • Graduating from a US high school, US college or from a high school or college in an English-speaking country
    • Taking an English proficiency exam and receiving an appropriate score
      • TOEFL Internet Based Test (IBT)-79
      • IELTS-Overall band 6.5 or higher

How to Apply for Graduate Admission

Step 1:

You must apply to the Toulouse Graduate School and meet the minimum requirements for UNT graduate admissions. 

  • U.S. students must submit the Toulouse Graduate School application online by following the instructions on the website.
  • International students must apply online through the Toulouse Graduate School by following these instructions.

Step 2:

You must also submit the following materials directly to the Toulouse Graduate School:

  • Official transcripts and academic documentation from all schools attended
  • Standardized test scores (sent via ETS) including GRE and TOEFL (for international students) - graduates of ABET, Inc. accredited programs do not need to submit GRE scores

Priority Dates 

The Department of Engineering Technology follows the application priority dates set by Toulouse Graduate School.

Fall applicants: We begin awarding assistantship funding on January 15th each year. To be considered for all funding opportunities, submit all required application materials by January 15th.
