Admissions Overview

Students in the UNT College of Music study with a highly acclaimed faculty of performers, composers, scholars and researchers, all of whom are dedicated to teaching the highly diverse student body that chooses to attend UNT. Students also have opportunities to work closely with internationally recognized guest artists and scholars through residencies, master classes and lectures.

How to Apply:

Step 1: Apply to UNT

An application to UNT is required prior to applying to the College of Music:

Once you have submitted your application to UNT, you must complete a College of Music application (opens September 1st for fall 2020):

Step 3: Audition

Once you have submitted your application to UNT and completed a College of Music application, you will need to audition*:

*Graduate academic-degree program applicants will submit supplemental materials in lieu of an audition. 

 

 

Undergraduate Admissions

How to Apply

Step 1: Apply to the University of North Texas

Apply online through ApplyTexas or The Common Application. After you apply to UNT and pay the application fee, you will receive an email which includes your Student ID# and EUID. The process to receive these items may take several weeks. Follow the directions in that email to activate your student account, then you may proceed to Step 2 to apply to the College of Music. Please note you can begin the music application once you receive the login information - you do not need to wait until your UNT admission decision has been made. 

Admission to the College of Music is contingent upon admission to the University of North Texas. Please refer to the UNT Admissions website for more information.

Step 2: Apply to the College of Music

Complete the College of Music application through Acceptd (opens September 1 each year):

  • Select 'Undergraduate Degrees' as your Level in the Start an Application box beneath the UNT logo
  • Select your Area (Brass, Jazz, Keyboard, Percussion, Strings, Voice, Woodwinds)
  • Select your Program (this is the primary instrument or voice on which you will audition) 
  • After you begin the application, you will indicate your desired degree(s) – e.g., composition, jazz studies, music education, performance, or the bachelor of arts. 

This is your application for audition, admission, and music merit scholarships. The application will require you to submit names and email addresses of three people whom you wish to submit music recommendations on your behalf. Only complete applications can be submitted. The music application fee is $20. 

Step 3: Complete the audition

Live auditions are requested through the College of Music application. Applicants invited for a live audition will be notified through email of their scheduled audition day/time. Please note certain areas require a screening (preliminary audition) video. Information regarding the screening is available within the area listing on the repertoire pages:

In addition to the audition, applicants in composition and music education who audition on-campus, will participate in an interview with faculty.  Instructions for arranging the interview will be included in the audition confirmation email you receive from collegeofmusic@unt.edu.

While live auditions are preferred, we do accept high quality video auditions if you are unable to audition in person. Follow the instructions on the College of Music application to submit your video audition. 

Applicants are notified of admission results by email after the final on-campus audition date.

Deadlines

SPRING 2020 ADMISSION – Acceptance of spring applications is determined in mid-September of each year based on studio space and ensemble needs.  Email collegeofmusic@unt.edu to inquire if your instrument/voice will accept applications. Applications for Spring 2020 admission consideration must be complete on or before FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 1, 2019, if applicable. 

FALL 2020 ADMISSION – To be considered for admission in the fall semester, preference will be given to applications received by Monday, December 2, 2019. Applications received after that date will be reviewed, and auditions will be scheduled on a case-by-case basis depending on space availability. Applications and video auditions for Fall 2020 admission consideration must be complete on or before MONDAY, FEBRUARY 24, 2020*.

*Final deadline to submit video auditions for Classical Piano and Jazz Voice is Saturday, February 1, 2020

Additional Information

The National Association of Schools of Music Code of Ethics Article V. requires that the acceptance of financial aid or the signing of a declaration of intent to attend a given institution shall not be binding if signed before May 1, of the calendar year of matriculation into a program of study at the undergraduate level.

Orientation/Registration:

  • When you have been accepted by the University, UNT Admissions will send information about registering for an Orientation session.

Scholarship Application:

  • The UNT College of Music application also serves as your music scholarship application. Announcement of awards typically begin on the first Monday in April.
  • We encourage all applicants to complete the UNT General Academic Scholarship Application.

Graduate Admissions

How to Apply

Step 1: Apply to the University of North Texas

Apply for admission to the UNT Toulouse Graduate School. There is a fee for this application. Once your application is received and the fee paid, you will receive an email from UNT which includes the Student ID# and EUID. The process to receive these items can take several weeks. Follow the instructions in that email to activate your account then proceed to Step 2. 

Graduate applicants to UNT are evaluated holistically, based on specific departmental and program requirements.  In the past, successful candidates usually have met certain GPA minima:

  • 3.00 GPA in the undergraduate degree for admission to the Master's program;
  • Or 3.50 GPA in the undergraduate degree for direct admission to Doctoral programs;
  • Or 3.50 GPA in Masters-level studies for admission to Doctoral programs

Step 2: Apply to the UNT College of Music

Complete the College of Music application through Acceptd (opens September 1 each year). 

This is your application for music admission, audition, scholarship, fellowships and assistantships. The application will require you to submit names and email addresses of three people whom you wish to submit music recommendations on your behalf. Only complete applications can be submitted. The music application fee is $20.

M.A., M.M.Ed. and Ph.D. applicants need only complete steps 1 and 2.

Step 3: Complete the audition

Applicants for admission to the M.M. or D.M.A. degree programs in performance or GACMP must pass an admission audition before a faculty panel. Applicants will request a live audition date through the online application. Please note all areas require a screening (preliminary audition) video. Information regarding the screening is available within the area listing on the repertoire pages.

Note - Some areas require live auditions for admission and/or award consideration - contact your faculty directly for more information. 

Applicants for admission to the M.M. and D.M.A. degree programs in conducting must submit the College of Music application and preliminary audition video by the first Monday in December. Qualified applicants will be invited to campus for a live audition and interview. For information regarding acceptance to the conducting program, please see the degree-specific admission requirements.

Music Scholarships, Assistantships, and Fellowships

The UNT College of Music application also serves as your application for music awards. Music awards offers are made each spring for the following academic year to qualified applicants. Preference for awards will be given to those who audition no later than the Monday following the last on-campus audition day.

Announcement of awards typically begin on the first Monday in April.

  • All undergraduate applicants must perform an audition.
  • You may audition live or by video recording. Follow the instructions on the College of Music online application to submit a high quality video audition.  Please note certain areas require a screening (preliminary audition) video.

  • Auditions are required for all graduate performance applicants. 
  • You may audition live (if invited) or by video recording. Live auditions are preferred. Follow the instructions on the College of Music online application to submit a high quality video audition.

Information about English Proficiency

All applicants must prove English Language Proficiency before they can be admitted to UNT and the College of Music. 

UNT offers an excellent language institute for learning English- Intensive English Language Institute (IELI). Students who are enrolled in IELI cannot begin music degree studies until they complete the language program or prove English Language Proficiency. Read more about IELI.

Additional Information

  • Applicants are notified via email of audition results after the final on-campus audition date.
  • F1 visa applicants will receive the I-20 letter from the Division of International Affairs after acceptance to UNT and the College of Music has been determined. Complete detail is available at the Division of International Affairs website.
  • BE SURE TO SEND ALL REQUIRED INFORMATION TO UNT Undergraduate Admissions or Toulouse Graduate School. WE CANNOT PROCESS YOUR FINAL ADMISSION DECISION UNTIL YOUR UNT FILE IS COMPLETE.

Second Bachelor's Admissions*

How to Apply

*The second bachelor's degree requires an earned/conferred undergraduate degree prior to enrollment. This program is a good option for those who have an earned degree in something other than music but are either not prepared or not eligible for graduate-level music coursework.  Applicants with an earned undergraduate music degree are eligible to apply for a second bachelor’s only if the second degree is unrelated to the first. For instance, an applicant with an undergraduate degree in music performance, may apply for the second bachelor’s degree in music education, but not a second bachelor’s degree in performance. Should you have additional questions regarding eligibility, please contact the admissions or advising office.

Step 1: Apply to the Texas Academy of Mathematics and Science (TAMS)

Complete the Online Application by January 15, 2020

Step 2: Apply to the College of Music

Complete the College of Music application through Acceptd only if applying for the Music Track.

  • Select 'Texas Academy of Mathematics and Science' as your Level in the Start an Application box beneath the UNT logo
  • Select 'TAMS Music Track' as your Area and Program
  • After you begin the application, you will indicate your instrument/voice to which you are applying.
  • You will be required to submit an audition video through Acceptd for consideration. Audition repertoire information can be found below*
  • Submit the name and email address of your two references. These references should be able to speak to your musical abilities and talents (private instructor, high school director, professional musician, etc.). 

*For classical audition requirements, refer to http://www.music.unt.edu/admissions/undergraduate-repertoire. For jazz audition requirements, refer to http://jazz.unt.edu/admission-auditions.

Step 3: Submit TAMS Application Materials:

  • Standardized test scores
  • Evaluations from your math, science, and English teachers, as well as your counselor or principal (4 total)
  • Residency questionnaire
  • Copies of your transcripts and report cards

Submit all documents to tamsadmissions@unt.edu. Applications are not complete until all of the above are received.

 

Selected applicants will be invited for interviews. On Interview Day, applicants take algebra tests and engage in conversational interviews to add depth and insight to applicant profiles. Additional information can be found on the TAMS website.
