Having an international perspective on issues enables you to make a positive impact on the world around you. The International Studies Program at the University of North Texas oversees coursework leading to a Master of Arts degree in International Studies. UNT is one of the few universities in the state that offers a graduate degree in this discipline.

The degree program is interdisciplinary, drawing on the courses and faculty members from various departments across campus as well as the UNT Health Science Center at Fort Worth. The interdisciplinary approach allows you to gain critical insights on key international issues.
Flexibility to explore
The degree program consists of two components: a professional skills area and a specialization area. Each area offers multiple tracks so you can design an individualized program that best meets your career aspirations.

Courses explore a wide range of topics from surface water hydrology to strategic supply chain management. Several courses in the Management Skills area are available online so you can better balance academic, professional and personal obligations. The degree program culminates with a graduate practicum seminar that integrates your learning and demonstrates your professional preparedness.
Strong faculty and student support
Faculty members in our program have a wide range of experiences and expertise. They’ve been honored by the Academy of International Business, the National Science Foundation and the Middle East Studies Association, among others.
UNT provides a wide variety of services exclusively to graduate students. The Graduate Student Writing Support office can help you with writing, and the Interdisciplinary Research Center offers assistance with statistical research.
The Toulouse Graduate School® offers several professional development workshops. Many of the workshops are available online for your convenience.
Attending UNT
Admission requirements
You must meet the admission requirements for the graduate school and the program. The graduate school’s admission requirements are outlined at the catalog and the graduate school website.
The program requirements include:
- An academic background in International Studies or a related field
- Foreign language proficiency
- Minimum 3.0 overall undergraduate GPA
Students without a background in International Studies can enroll in the program but are required to complete additional prerequisite work before taking graduate courses.
In addition, you'll need to provide the following materials to the program:
- International Studies program application form (contact the program office for this form)
- Two letters of recommendation
- 750- to 1,000-word statement of purpose that addresses your international experiences, career goals and how a master's degree will help you achieve those goals
- Résumé or curriculum vitae
Degree requirements
- 6 credit hours of background international studies courses (only for students without academic background in International Studies or a related field)
- 6 credit hours in the professional skills area
- 21 credit hours in the specialization areas (You must select two tracks and take hours in each.)
- 3 credit hours in a graduate practicum seminar
Financial assistance
The university and the College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences offer several financial assistance programs to help you earn your graduate degree. Those programs include scholarships, fellowships and external grants.
