What we offer
Women’s and Gender Studies is available as a minor to undergraduate students and can complement any major. With this minor, you have the flexibility to choose courses that appeal to your academic and career interests.
Our courses focus on examining the role gender plays in a person’s experience and how race, ethnicity, class, sexual orientation and age impact these experiences as well. This enables you to:
- Analyze gender differences and commonalities across cultures
- Demonstrate the importance of social responsibility
- Develop strategies for reducing prejudice and gender stereotyping
- Examine traditional and feminist assumptions made about women
- Understand the role of gender in relationships among the economic, social, political, environmental and symbolic systems of societies
These historical and theoretical perspectives are supported by research conducted by more than 30 affiliated faculty members who regularly teach women’s and gender studies courses.
In addition to necessary coursework, you can gain insight about women’s and gender studies by attending public forums and discussions sponsored by the program. We also offer you:

What to expect
You’ll need to complete 18 credit hours, including 9 advanced credit hours, to satisfy requirements for the minor. More than 60 gender-related courses are offered through a wide range of departments, including anthropology, communication studies, economics, English, history and sociology.
The Career Center, Learning Center and professional academic advisors are among the many valuable resources available to you at UNT. The Career Center can provide advice about internships, future employment opportunities and getting hands-on experience in your major. The Learning Center offers workshops on speed reading, study skills and time management. Academic advisors will help you plan your class schedule each semester.
