IT Idea Center FAQs

Q. What is the IT Idea Center?

A. The UNT IT Idea Center is a process by which information technology-centered ideas or projects can be proposed and developed for possible implementation as a formal project or targeted as an incubation project to explore emerging trends. The UNT IT Idea Center allows individuals, business units, or ad hoc interest groups to submit fully-formed ideas or speculative applications that could advance the mission of UNT. Ideas are vetted by UNT IT staff who have the expertise or a job function related to the proposed concept.

Q. Why should I submit an IT Idea?

A. You can use the UNT IT Idea Center if you have a suggestion for new information technology systems or software that will help the university fulfill its mission. In a complex organization like a large university, there are a lot of good ideas for employing new information technology, but even some of the best ideas may not make it past – or even to – the testing and development stage. The UNT IT Idea Center has been established to ensure that all good ideas receive fair consideration and we are not missing an opportunity to keep up with the times or to drive innovation within our university.

Q. What happens after I submit an idea?

A.  After an IT-related idea is proposed, the idea is forwarded to a staff member of the IT management who has related expertise or oversight for evaluation and recommendation. The Idea may be assigned to an individual or working group for further investigation or routed to IT Governance for information gathering and evaluation. Recommendations, supporting information, resource suggestions, or equivalent existing solutions for an idea are documented for further consideration. If consideration of the idea results in a formal project proposal, it will be forwarded for consideration by UNT's IT Planning and Prioritization committee. Otherwise, feedback will be given regarding the possible progression or further development of the idea.

Q. When can I expect to hear something about my IT Idea suggestion?

A. You will immediately receive an email acknowledgment that your idea has been received. An IT staff member may contact you for additional explanation or clarification of your idea. You also will receive notification as your idea passes each step of the consideration process.  The evaluation time will vary depending on the complexity and scope of the idea. You will receive a final communication regarding the outcome of the consideration process and have an opportunity to stay engaged with the idea development if it requires further consideration.

The ITPP was chartered by UNT's president for the purpose of reviewing and prioritizing all IT project investment proposals submitted by the UNT business and academic units based on the value delivery and linkage to university strategy.
