Professional Associations

The National Communication Association advances Communication as the discipline that studies all forms, modes, media, and consequences of communication through humanistic, social scientific, and aesthetic inquiry.

NCA serves the scholars, teachers, and practitioners who are its members by enabling and supporting their professional interests in research and teaching. Dedicated to fostering and promoting free and ethical communication, NCA promotes the widespread appreciation of the importance of communication in public and private life, the application of competent communication to improve the quality of human life and relationships, and the use of knowledge about communication to solve human problems.

The Southern States Communication Association's purpose is to promote the study, criticism, research, teaching, and application of the artistic, humanistic, and scientific principles of communication. SSCA, a not-for-profit organization, exists for educational, scientific, and literary purposes only.

This year, students and faculty members will be presenting for the 86th Annual SSCA Convention, Communication And Conscience in Austin, Texas.

ICA is an academic association for scholars interested in the study, teaching, and application of all aspects of human and mediated communication. ICA began more than 50 years ago as a small association of U.S. researchers and is now a truly international association with more than 4,500 members in 80 countries. Since 2003, ICA has been officially associated with the United Nations as a non-governmental association (NGO).

Western States Communication Association (WSCA) was founded in 1929. WSCA is a not-for-profit educational association of scholars, teachers, and students of communication with over 1,000 members from around the globe. WSCA publishes two scholarly journals--Western Journal of Communication and Communication Reports--as well as a newsletter, WSCA News. WSCA also hosts an annual convention. In February 2016, we'll be meeting in San Diego, CA to explore the theme "Collaboration, Innovation, and Convergence." WSCA conventions provide wonderful opportunities to learn about and discuss current issues in communication, while also offering opportunities for networking and socializing. Central States Communication Association (CSCA) is a professional, academic organization of primary and secondary school teachers, students, college and university professors, and communication professionals. CSCA was founded in 1931 to promote the communication discipline in educational, scholarly, and professional endeavors.

Foundation has been selected as the theme for the 2016 Central States Communication Association convention in order to celebrate a place where colleagues can discuss new teaching ideas, friends can reconnect, and all of us can maintain and build grounding and stability as communication scholars.

The Eastern Communication Association (ECA) is a professional organization of scholars, teachers, and students of Communication Studies. The ECA was initially established in 1910 and continues as the oldest professional communication association in the United States.

This year's conference encourages our collaborative consideration about [R]evolution in the communication discipline. Are the field, our scholarship, and our teaching best served by a series of slow, incremental changes, or is it time to promote radical, pervasive overthrow of the status quo?

The Texas Speech Communication Association is the largest state professional communication association in the nation.

This year's conference, "Shaping the Future" is from October 6-8, 2016 in San Antonio, Texas!

The Rhetoric Society of America represents a large and growing community of scholars, teachers and students interested in the study of rhetoric. RSA embraces a broad conception of rhetoric which includes spoken, written, visual and material texts circulating in a wide variety of situations ranging from the public to the private and from face-to-face to digital, within historical and contemporary social, political, and cultural contexts including race, gender, class, sexuality, and ethnicity among others.
