Required Human Subjects Training

Researchers and all Key Personnel on the research team working with human subjects must complete required training before receiving IRB approval.

Important changes in training procedures:

As of May 1, 2019, human subject training must be renewed every 3 years. Note: Researchers and Key Personnel with an active protocol will not have to renew their training. Researchers and Key Personnel who submit protocols on or after May 1, 2019 will be required to update their training certificate if their completion date exceeds three years.

Please note: The NIH no longer offers Protecting Human Research Participants (PHRP) course. The IRB will accept NIH/PHRP training certificates if they adhere to the above requirements.

To complete the required human subjects training - Complete the Collaborative Institutional Research Initiative (CITI Program) “Social & Behavioral Research - Basic/Refresher” course and/or “Biomedical Research - Basic/Refresher” course.  Follow instructions found here.

If you are an unaffiliated researcher (i.e. you do not have a UNT-issued e-mail address), there are three options available to you:

  1. Complete NIH’s Human Subjects Research Online Training found here: https://phrptraining.com/#!/. There are fees associated with training and it takes approximately 3 hours to complete.
  2. Complete training at your home institution or by an external university. If you have completed human subjects training at your institution or by an external university, please contact untirb@unt.edu to see if your training is equivalent to the UNT IRB requirements.
