FAYETTEVILLE, Arkansas — The North Texas soccer team will play its first round 2019 NCAA Tournament match at 6:30 p.m. CT on Friday at No. 8 Arkansas who is a national three-seed. The game will be broadcasted on the SEC Network +.
This is the seventh NCAA Tournament the Mean Green have made and is the third year in a row they have made the NCAA Tournament and the fourth time in the last five years.
UNT (15-5-1) is less than a week removed from winning its 16th conference championship in just the program's 25th season. The Mean Green had a second-half offensive explosion against Florida Atlantic in the championship match. UNT scored three goals in the second-half to win the game 5-2 and claim the title.
Arkansas (16-3-2), who won the SEC regular season title and lost the tournament championship game to South Carolina, has four top 25 wins this season including knocking off then No. 1 North Carolina.
North Texas had four players named to the Conference USA All-Tournament team. Senior
Natalie Newell and junior
Brooke Lampe were named all-tournament and senior
Dominique James was the C-USA Tournament Defensive MVP and freshman
Allie Byrd was the C-USA Tournament Offensive MVP.
A win for UNT on Tuesday would be the Mean Green's first-ever win in the NCAA Tournament and it would be the Mean Green's first win over a top 10 nationally ranked team since Sept. 1, 2000 when they beat No. 9 SMU. A win on Friday would also be the highest ranked opponent UNT has also ever beaten.
