Jack Helsley

Bassist Jack Helsley is currently a Teaching Fellow and Doctoral Student in Jazz Performance at University of North Texas, and bassist with the One O’Clock Lab Band. After receiving a Bachelors Degree in Music from the University of Louisville, he toured extensively throughout Europe, Africa and the U.S. with the United States Air Force Band. As a freelance bassist, he has been featured on numerous recordings of jazz, pop, rock, and country artists, and has performed with such notable talents as Michael Brecker, Jeff Watts, Joey Calderazzo, Randy Brecker, Benny Golsen, Ernie Watts, Bob Berg, Lynne Arriale, David Baker and Jamey Aebersold.

He holds a Master of Music degree in Jazz Studies from Indiana University, and has been on faculty at DePauw University, Anderson University, University of Indianapolis, Eastern Illinois University, Western Illinois University, and Marian University. He is also formerly the host of the Jazz Radio show “Have You Heard” on WICR-FM. As a Doctoral student, Jack is researching how to utilize dosimetry to examine frequency spectrum present during UNT jazz ensemble rehearsals. He is attempting to quantify low frequency content, its impact on A vs. C weighting procedures, and the possible impacts on public health and standards.
