Materials in the collection are divided into two series: Military Records; and Personal Papers. Within the series, records are roughly grouped by type of document. There appears to be no chronological order for the folders, but within each folder for a particular military company, records are arranged chronologically. These folders include records from Company F, Company K, Company B, Company I, and Company D. Personal papers include wartime and post-war correspondence, some business materials and legal documents, and a diary spanning the years 1862 to 1875. Also included are two notebooks, one undated and the other dated 1864.
The Hamilton Redway Family Papers contain correspondence, a diary, legal documents, financial documents, and printed material relating to Hamilton K. Redway’s activities during the Civil War. Included in the collection are several captured orders from Confederate General James Longstreet’s command (1862), and printed material pertaining to Redway’s wife, Loriette.
Hamilton K. Redway served as a corporal in Company K, 24th Regiment of the New York Volunteers (1862-1863) and as lieutenant and later captain of Company F, 1st New York Volunteer Veterans Cavalry (1863-1865) during the Civil War. After the war, Redway was second lieutenant in Company D, U.S. Colored Cavalry (1866).

Scope and Contents: The collection includes correspondence, a diary, legal documents, financial documents, and printed material relating to Redway's activities in the Union Army. A number of ordnance lists and muster rolls are included in the collection, as well as several captured orders from Confederate General James Longstreet's command (1862). Correspondence, legal documents, financial documents, and printed material pertaining to Redway's wife, Loriette, are also included. The records are divided by type into two record series: Military Records; and Personal Papers. Among the personal papers are two small, pocket sized (photocopied) notebooks in which Redway kept track of the equipment issued to the men under his command and also made notes about who was in the hospital, who was promoted, and who was on furlough. Some of the larger documents in the collection have been removed for storage into oversize boxes. There is a separation sheet noting when material has been removed from a folder and indicating where it is being housed.
