Leonard S. Mewhinney was born near Holland, Texas on November 11, 1906. He was born into a family of farmer and grew up on his father’s farm where he learned to pick cotton from the age of 6. He started grade school at the 3rd grade level and attended though high school graduation. His first proper job was at a shoe store where he first read articles in the local newspaper about the Naval Academy. In 1923 he joined the Navy and served for 30 years, including during WWII. After leaving the Navy in 1953 he got a job teaching management classes at North Texas State University where he taught a variety of courses for 17 years. Around 1960 Mewhinney took his first labor arbitration case while also teaching at NTSU. Mewhinney really enjoyed his job doing labor arbitration and would eventually quit his teaching job to work as a labor arbitration full-time.

Scope and Contents: This collection contains Mewhinney’s labor arbitration papers and records for the years 1968-1984. There are also three folders of information filled with papers and letters relating to Mewhinney’s non-professional life and Naval career.
