Abstract

This collection is an assemblage of Superconducting Super Collider proposals from 1987.

Scope and Contents of the Materials

Contains proposals, and plans for the following areas:  Dallas-Fort Worth, Trans-Pecos, Central Texas, Sam Houston Site, South Texas, Garden City Site, South Houston, Texas South Plains, and Lamar County. Also contained are documents from the Central Texas Accelerator Committee.

Collection Historical Note

The Superconducting Super Collider (AKA "Desertron") was a particle accelerator project located in Waxahachie, Texas that was in existence from 1987 to the program's cancellation in October 1993. Dr. Louis Ianniello, took leave from the Basic Energy Sciences program to serve as the project's first director for 15 months. Ianniello was replaced by Roy Schwitters, a physicist at the University of Texas at Austin. The closing of the Superconducting Super Collider contributed to a minor recession in the Dallas-Fort Worth region.
