Scope and Contents of the Materials

Collection consists of correspondence, speeches, autobiographical and biographical sketches, papers, and dissertation of Benjamin Bee (B.B.) Harris and family.  B.B. Harris was Professor and Director of the Biology Department and Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences at North Texas State Teachers College (now the University of North Texas) known for his work and avid interest in the natural and agricultural sciences, especially in the area of conservation.

Collection Historical Note

Benjamin Bee Harris was born in Pendleton, South Carolina in 1886.  Demonstrating an early interest in agricultural sciences, Harris first arrived to North Texas State Normal College (now the University of North Texas) in Denton in 1916 to teach biology and agriculture.  After leaving to obtain graduate degrees in Ohio and at the University of Texas, Harris returned to Denton as Professor and Director of the Department of Biology.  He was later appointed Dean of Administration and Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences.  Harris maintained a lifelong interest in the outdoors and was dedicated to the research of conservation sciences.
