Abstract

Papers, 1954 - 1975 of the fred Razor Cobb Family Concerning his carrer as a golf coat at the University of North Texas.  Included in the collection are: clippings, a letter, obituaries, and a photograph.

Scope and Contents of the Materials

The bulk of the collection concerns the death of Fred R. Cobb in 1954, primarily with clippings and the letter.

Collection Historical Note

The materials in this collection were gathered by Edna Reed Cobb, the wife of Fred R. Cobb.  The material in the collection documents the career of UNT Coach Fred Cobb.

Biographical Note

Fred Rayzor Cobb (1899 – 1954) was born in Antelope, Texas.  He was raised in Denton, Texas, graduating from Denton High School.  He attended Georgia Tech before transferring to North Texas State College (now known as the University of North Texas) in 1919.  He was an athlete at both schools, participating on the baseball and football teams.  Cobb received his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from UNT.  He taught at McKinney High School from 1921 to 1925.  Fred Cobb then managed the Southern Hotel, in Denton.  He was hired as a physical education instructor in 1940.  In 1941 he started to coach the golf team. Cobb was the driving force behind the building of the eighteen-hole golf course at UNT. Under Fred Cobb’s coaching, the golf team won the NCAA championship four years in a row starting in 1949.  Cobb served as president of the National Golf Coaches Association in 1952.  He was inducted into the UNT Athletic Hall of Fame in 1987.
