Graduation Frequently-Asked Questions

I finished my classes. When will I receive my diploma?

Diplomas are mailed out, from JOSTENS, 8-10 weeks after the last day of semester (after final grades are posted).

How do I apply for graduation?

Log into my.untdallas.edu  and go to your student center, click on "Student Center", "My Academics", then "Apply for Graduation".  Follow the prompts to confirm your degree credentials and select your expected graduation term and then hit "Submit Application."

I am trying to apply for graduation but it's not letting me.

Check here to make sure the application has opened for the current semester and/or has not already closed for the current semester. If the application has already closed, you will need to wait until the following semester to apply.

Once I apply for graduation, what are my next steps?

If you haven't done so already, set an appointment with your advisor to do a final "Grad Check".  Contact the Bookstore to order your cap and gown, invitations, and other graduation related items.  Be on the lookout for an email from your advisor, letting you know if your application was approved or marked incomplete.  The email will go to your student email account.  If you receive an email that your application was marked as incomplete, contact your Academic Advisor for information.

I applied for graduation but haven't heard anything since I applied.

Once your advisor has reviewed your application, you will receive an email, to your student email account, letting you know if you were approved.  If you were not approved, please follow the instructions in the email or contact your advisor.

How do I know if my application for graduation was approved?

Students will be contacted by UNTD student email regarding their application status. Applications in an approved status mean that the student is on track to graduate. It does not indicate that the student has been awarded their degree. Students should check their student emails frequently to keep apprised of their graduation application status.

What if I missed the deadline to apply for graduation?

Students who have not yet applied for graduation may contact the Office of the Registrar at 972-780-3664 or at registrar@untdallas.edu for more information. Any students who are approved late through appeal are not guaranteed to have their name printed in the commencement program.

When will my degree be awarded?

The awarding of degrees does not occur until after the last day of the semester, grades are posted, and all requirements are met. This often occurs after commencement, about 2-4 weeks after the last day of class. Your diploma will not arrive until 4-6 weeks after your degree has been awarded, but your transcript will reflect your degree posting as soon as it is awarded.

I graduated. When will I receive my certificate?

Please allow 8-10, after the end of finals, for processing.  If it has been more than 10 weeks since the end of finals, and you still have not received your certificate, you will need to contact your Academic Dean.

When can I expect to receive my certificate?

Certificates will be mailed out by the academic department 6 to 8 weeks after final grades and requirements are confirmed. Contact your academic department for more information.

If I don’t attend commencement will my degree still be awarded?

Yes. Students who elect not to participate in commencement will still have their degree awarded approximately 2-4 weeks after the last day of class, and will also receive their diploma 6-8 weeks after their degree has been awarded.

When can I expect to receive my diploma?

Diplomas for students should be mailed 6 to 8 weeks after final grades and requirements are confirmed.

How can I order additional copies of my diploma?

Please complete the Diploma Order form found here (/important-forms).  Once you have completed the form, bring, fax, or email it to the Registrar Office.  Requests for additional diplomas are sent to and mailed from JOSTENS 3 times a year (January, May and August) and usually take 4-6 weeks for delivery.  Please do not contact JOSTENS directly.

What is the difference between graduation and commencement?

Graduation refers to the process in which students apply for their degree to be awarded at the end of the semester. The advising and registrar’s offices will complete final audits of student degrees. If the final audit is approved then students will be awarded a degree and a diploma will be mailed.

Commencement refers to the event held by the institution to celebrate students’ graduation. Commencement includes the public conferring of degrees, walking across the stage, and receiving a UNT Dallas diploma cover. Walking in commencement does not guarantee that a student has graduated. Some students may walk across the stage and appear in the commencement program while not having graduated yet.

I graduate in the summer. Is there a graduation (commencement) ceremony in the summer?

No, commencement is only held in May and December.  If you need 6 hours or less to graduate, you can participate in the May commecement ceremony. Otherwise, you will receive information for the December commencement ceremony.

I walked in the commencement ceremony, does that mean I graduated?

No, walking in the commencement ceremony does not guarantee that you have graduated.  Graduation is based on the successful completetion of your degree requirements.
