1: General Winter 3W1 Session Questions
  1. What is Winter Session?
    Winter Session is a three-week online session taught within the Spring term. The same amount of content is covered in a shorter time frame compared to what is normally covered during a 16-week semester. Winter Session classes are scheduled from December 16, 2019 to January 10, 2020.
  2. Is there a limit to the amount of credit hours I can take during the 3W1 Winter Session?
    Students can enroll in up to 4 semester credit hours for the 3W1 Session.
  3. Are there 3W1 classes during the holidays?
    No classes are held during the winter break which is December 24, 2019 through December 31, 2019 and January 1, 2020, with no classes held on New Year’s Day.
  4. What classes are offered?
    Please refer to the Schedule of Classes for the current listing of Winter Session classes. Winter session classes are restricted to online and study abroad offerings.
  5. How do I register for winter session 3W1 classes?
    Current students can register for the Winter Session during their regularly scheduled registration appointment period for Spring 2020 registration. Students register for Winter Session classes the same way as other classes using their MyUNT Portal.
  6. Which Save and Soar participants are eligible for Winter Session discounts?
    Only Save and Soar Tuition Plan participants that are enrolled in 15 or more semester credit hours this fall are eligible for the $100 per semester credit hour discount in board-designated tuition for enrollment in the Winter Session.
  7. Who is eligible to enroll in the 3W1 session?
    All new and continuing UNT students can enroll for the winter session. New UNT students must be admitted to the University and complete orientation by the established deadline for enrolling in the winter session. Continuing students may enroll during their regular Spring 2020 registration time period.
2: Tuition and Payment Questions
  1. What is the payment deadline for the winter session 3W1 classes?
    The payment deadline is Friday, December 13, 2019. However, be advised that the MyUNT Portal will be down for maintenance on December 13 from 4:30 pm to 11:59 pm.
  2. What is the payment deadline for students registering after December 13?
    Late registration begins Saturday, December 14 with payment due by 5:00 pm the same day and ends Monday, December 16 at 4:30 pm.
  3. Will my spring financial aid pay for my winter session 3W1 courses?
    Spring financial aid may pay for both winter and spring charges. The winter 3W1 session is considered part of the spring term. Spring anticipated aid can be used to assist with securing winter session classes until financial aid is able to disburse.

    If spring anticipated aid is not enough to cover all charges from the winter session and spring, the student will be responsible for making payment arrangements for the difference. Keep in mind, additional charges from taking winter session courses will reduce any anticipated spring refunds.
  4. Do winter session 3W1 classes cost different?
    3W1 will be included in the overall flat rate tuition calculation for spring.
  5. What kind of discount will I get for enrolling in Winter Session as a Save and Soar participant?
    If you are a Save and Soar Tuition Plan participants that is enrolled in 15 or more semester credit hours this fall you are eligible for a $100 per semester credit hour discount in board-designated tuition for enrollment in the Winter Session.
  6. When will my financial aid disburse if I take classes during the winter session 3W1?
    Financial aid funds will disburse to the student’s account on or after the spring disbursement date. The first spring disbursement date is scheduled for 10 days before spring classes start. Students will need to plan accordingly for purchasing textbooks for the winter session. As needed, Student Financial Services will begin issuing refunds the week of January 6, 2020.
  7. Will an installment plan be available for the winter session 3W1?
    Yes. Students can select an installment plan for the Spring semester that will include the Winter Session classes. The first payment for students registered during the Winter Session is due Friday, December 13, 2019. Students registering after that date will be required to pay the first payment on the same day they register.
  8. Will anticipated or pending financial aid be considered for the payment deadline?
    Yes. The Winter Session is considered part of the Spring term. Spring anticipated aid can be used to assist with securing Winter Session classes until financial aid is able to disburse. Students with enough anticipated aid posted for Spring 2020 to cover their entire balance due for the Winter Session will not be required to make payment. If Spring anticipated aid is not enough to cover all charges from the Winter Session and Spring, the student will be responsible for making payment arrangements for the difference. Keep in mind, additional charges from taking Winter Session courses will reduce any anticipated Spring refunds.
  9. How will the full-time, flat rate undergraduate tuition work for the winter session 3W1?
    The enrollment for the entire Spring semester, including any classes during the Winter Session or Regular Session, will be considered for the calculation. Students enrolled in a total of 12 to 15 credit hours during the semester will be assessed the “flat rate” for Board Designated Tuition, any Differential Tuition and most mandatory fees. Students can save money by enrolling in 12 – 15 hours in the Regular Session and a Winter Session course. Students enrolling in more than 15 hours in the Regular Session and taking a Winter Session course can save even more money.
  10. Is there a financial advantage for taking winter session 3W1 classes?
    Students taking online only courses are not assessed some of the mandatory fees, including the Student Union Fee, Medical Services Fee, Transportation Fee, Recreational Facility Fee, Environmental Services Fee and Intercollegiate Athletics Fee.

    With the full-time, flat rate tuition, Undergraduate students can save money by enrolling in 12 – 15 hours in the Regular Session and a Winter Session course. Students enrolling in more than 15 hours in the Regular Session and taking a Winter Session course can save even more money.
3: Academic Questions
  1. How will winter session 3W1 grades show on my transcript?
    Grades will be viewable via the MyUNT Portal approximately three business days after the end of the session. While grades are viewable online, official transcripts for Spring will not be available until the end of the Spring 2020 term. The winter session is considered part of the spring term.
  2. How will winter courses impact my academic standing?
    Winter session courses will count toward standing, GPA, and degree requirements in the same fashion all coursework does at the University. Academic standing and GPA calculations for the winter session, however, will not occur until May (the end of the spring term).

    For continuing students enrolled for the prior fall term, academic suspension rules still apply. If a student is suspended at the end of the fall, spring courses including winter session courses are cancelled.
  3. Will Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP) be evaluated at the completion of the winter session?
    SAP for the winter session will be reviewed at the conclusion of the spring term. Therefore, winter session grades will not change a student’s financial aid SAP status for the spring term.
  4. Can I use winter session 3W1 courses to graduate in the prior fall?
    No, while courses taken during the winter session can count toward completion, you cannot use these courses to graduate for a term that is already complete. If a winter session course completes the requirements for a degree, it will be awarded and posted at the end of the spring. Letters of degree completion are available in your College advising office.
4: Other questions
  1. How do I obtain an enrollment verification?
    The Office of the Registrar can provide an enrollment verification for the winter session.
  2. I want to participate in a study abroad program during winter session 3W1. May I use my financial aid to cover additional expenses?
    Enrollment from the study abroad program during the winter session will be combined with spring enrollment to determine financial aid eligibility. Students should make arrangements to use personal funds to pay for travel and other expenses that they may incur prior to the start of their program. Student Financial Aid and Scholarships (SFAS) is unable to authorize financial aid to disburse prior to the start of the winter session program. Financial aid funds will disburse to student accounts on or after the spring disbursement date. The first spring disbursement date is scheduled for 10 days before spring classes start. We recommend students contact SFAS in advance of their travels to discuss options for financing their study abroad program.
