Off-Campus Housing

Where do UNT students live?

The University of North Texas is the largest residential campus, public or private, in the Dallas-Fort Worth region. About 6,000 students live in campus residence halls, which are often full to capacity.

Of the more than 36,000 students attending UNT, about 27,000 commute, with more than 17,000 of those commuting from outside Denton County. Commuter, Off-Campus and Nontraditional Student Services provides services and programs to help meet your needs if you are an off-campus or nontraditional student. Nontraditional students typically include students over the age of 24, students returning from a leave or after military duty, or students with family or full-time job obligations.

UNT residence policy

As a full-time UNT student, you will be required to live in an on-campus residence hall until you have earned 30 semester credit hours toward your bachelor's degree or completed two long semesters of classes (fall and spring semesters).

Married students and veterans are exempt from this policy. You also may be exempt if you are older than 21, if you have a medical disability or if you plan to live with your parents while attending UNT. You must submit a written request to the housing office for an exemption to the policy. The office must approve the exemption, even if you automatically qualify for the exemption.

UNT offers 14 residence halls, each with its own personality. McConnell Hall is limited to high school students participating in UNT's Texas Academy of Mathematics and Science. The other 13 residence halls are:

  • Bruce Hall
  • Clark Hall
  • The College Inn
  • Crumley Hall
  • Honors Hall (exclusively for Honors College students)
  • Kerr Hall
  • Legends Hall
  • Maple Hall
  • Mozart Square
  • Santa Fe Square
  • Traditions Hall
  • Victory Hall
  • West Hall

For details or for more information on UNT's residence policy, visit housing.unt.edu or call 940-565-2610.

How to find off-campus housing

UNT does not maintain a list of approved off-campus housing. However, visiting Commuter, Off-Campus and Nontraditional Student Services or calling 940-565-3807 can help you start your search for an apartment, house or roommate in Denton.

Denton has more than 90 apartment complexes. Many are within walking distance of the campus, and most include washer/dryer connections or laundry rooms, swimming pools and cable television connections. A few complexes have wheelchair-accessible apartments. Some apartments in Denton are furnished, but most are unfurnished.

Apartment vacancies are listed in the classified sections of the North Texas Daily, UNT's student newspaper, and the local newspapers for Denton and surrounding communities.

Rideshare, carpool and public transportation options

A carpool web site is available. UNT is one of a few universities nationwide that maintains an online rideshare/carpool system. Students and staff may access the site at http://alternetrides.com.

The Denton County Transportation Authority also offers public transportation services to help you get around the Denton area. The DCTA's Connect features bus routes that make about 180 stops in Denton. A separate bus serves Lewisville and has 90 stops.

The DCTA Commuter Express makes two stops on campus and can transport you to and from downtown Dallas, Lewisville and Carrollton. UNT students can ride the Express for free with a valid UNT student ID. Access www.unt.edu/transit or www.dcta.net for more information and schedules.
