The sociology program offers courses introducing the student to the study of human social interaction and organization ranging from the individual in small groups to entire societies. Areas of special attention include marriage and the family, urban sociology, developing societies, medical sociology, population, social problems, social psychology, aging, inequality and race, class and gender.
The program is designed to prepare students for professional careers in a number of fields, including research, education, probation, law enforcement, aging and government. A minor in sociology provides useful background for those pursuing a degree in such areas as business, psychology, art, communications, education and music.
The department offers undergraduate and graduate programs in the following areas:
1. Hours for Degree: Completion of a minimum of 124 semester hours, 42 of which must be advanced.

Maximum of 36 hours of correspondence, extension, credit by examination and/or military service credit is allowed toward degree.
DRED (Traffic Safety) courses may not be used to satisfy any portion of a degree in sociology.
BA with a Major in Sociology (HTML )
A minor in sociology requires a minimum of 18 hours, including 6 advanced and SOCI 1510.

Students who expect to teach sociology in secondary schools must meet the requirements of the state of Texas for teacher certification as listed in the College of Education section of this catalog. This will include all sociology courses that are required and recommended above.
