Lone Star Emmys recognize two programs from UNT’s ntTV for Best Student Production

DENTON (UNT), Texas -- For the fifth time since 2005, ntTV, the University of North Texas' student-run television station, has been recognized for excellence by Texas' Lone Star Emmy chapter, which is part of the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences.

The Lone Star Emmy chapter recognizes work from university and college television stations in the category of Best Student Production. The chapter gave awards this year to two UNT nominees in the category -- "Backpack Journalist," a feature story that aired on "ntTV Nightly News," the station's Monday-Thursday evening newscast; and "The Republican Faceoff," a three-hour special broadcast on ntTV this past January to cover the debate for Republican candidates for this year's Texas gubernatorial election. The debate was held on the UNT campus.

Two other programs that aired on ntTV during the past year were also nominated for Best Student Production -- "Homecoming 2009: A Look Back," a documentary/news feature about the university's 2009 Homecoming weekend; and "Taboo Topics," a roundtable discussion on complicated issues in religion and politics, featuring experts presenting information in an unbiased manner. "Taboo Topics" begins its second season on ntTV the week of Oct. 25.

The Lone Star Emmys are judged by television professionals outside the state of Texas.

"Traditionally, only one award is given each year for Best Student Production, but this year, the judges felt that both ‘Backpack Journalist' and ‘The Republican Faceoff' were worthy of recognition," said Trey Friedrichs, content/marketing director for ntTV and a senior radio/television/film major.

"Backpack Journalist," written, shot and edited by David Carden, an August 2010 graduate of UNT, chronicled how the changing technological landscape in the television industry has impacted broadcast reporters. The story aired on ntTV last spring.

"The Republican Faceoff" included a one-hour show that introduced the debate among Texas gubernatorial candidates Kay Bailey Hutchison, Debra Medina and incumbent Gov. Rick Perry, the live broadcast of the debate and a 30-minute post-debate show that featured live reports from student field reporters and commentary and discussion from two UNT political scientists.

Lone Star Emmys in Best Student Production were previously presented to ntTV in 2009, 2007, 2006 and 2005. In 2007, two ntTV student-produced programs received awards in the category.

The Lone Star Emmy chapter has presented awards each year since it was founded in 2002. The chapter is dedicated to becoming the primary portal to connect professionals and students in Texas' television broadcast-related fields for networking and career development. The chapter serves all 19 television markets in Texas, and includes members from TV-related fields, including news and non-news broadcasting; production; post production; education; advertising; and public relations.
