Theft Prevention

The University of North Texas Police Department would like your help in an effort to decrease the numbers of thefts that occur on and off campus. Our department is concentrating efforts in key locations and times throughout the university. We are asking for your assistance to help us by eliminating opportunities of potential theft in our community.

Motor Vehicle Theft

The UNT Police Department asks that everyone pay special attention to the following tips:

  • If you have a car alarm make sure it's activated.
  • Make sure all doors are locked, and windows are rolled up.
  • Park in well lit areas.
  • If you have an detachable face for your stereo, take it with you or hide it in your vehicle
  • Hide any property of value in your vehicle. The trunk of your vehicle is a good location.
  • Do not load your vehicle the night before you plan to leave .
  • Keep the locations where you hide valuable property in your vehicle a secret.
  • Do not let anyone borrow your keys without your permission, and keep them hidden away.

Bicycle Theft

  • Register bicycles with UNT PD. You will be given a decal to place on your bicycle serving as a visual deterrent to a thief, showing that the property is recorded and can be tracked to the owner.
  • Make sure to secure bicycle to a bicycle rack.
  • A U-lock is recommended to secure your bicycle to a rack.
  • Replace quick release levers with a washer and nut. This will necessitate a thief needing more time to tamper with your property.
  • If quick release is used, make sure and take parts with you.

Book Theft

  • Write an identifying number, such as your license number, in ink in at least two places inside all textbooks.
  • Never leave books unattended. Remember that it only takes a few seconds for a thief to strike.
  • If your book(s) turn up missing, report it to the police immediately: the thief may still be in the area.

Identity Theft

  • Identity theft is a serious crime. It occurs when your personal information is stolen and used without your knowledge to commit fraud or other crimes. Identity theft can cost you time and money. It can destroy your credit and
    ruin your good name.
