Credit by Examination

CREDIT BY EXAMINATION OVERVIEW

Are you still in high school but want to get a head start on earning your bachelor’s degree at the University of North Texas? We offer several ways for you to accomplish that even before you enroll in your first class as an incoming freshman.

By completing Advanced Placement courses and examinations, College Level Examination Program subject examinations or International Baccalaureate examinations, you may earn academic credit and test out of certain UNT courses. This, in turn, helps you earn your undergraduate degree sooner and begin your career earlier than other students. These courses and examinations can be taken during high school, at another college or university, or once you enroll at UNT.

AP examinations, necessary scores and our equivalent courses are listed in the following section. CLEP and IB examinations are reviewed by the dean who oversees your major to determine how they can apply to your degree.

Credit by examination may:

• not be used to reduce certain general requirements, such as completing at least 30
• not be granted for a prerequisite course
• not be substituted for any grade (including an “F”) that you earned for a course in high school, at UNT, or at another college or university

At UNT, we offer a traditional, intellectually rigorous college experience. You will also have opportunities to participate in research and make friends with students from around the world. We feature 42 academic organizations and 44 honor societies, including one for freshmen – Alpha Lambda Delta. We equaled Carnegie Mellon and Princeton universities in the number of students named Goldwater Scholars in math, science and engineering.

Students of all majors may apply to the Honors College, which enriches the academic and intellectual experience of highly talented and motivated students. Admission is competitive. If accepted, you can apply to live with others possessing similar academic goals in Honors Hall, a residence hall available to students in the Honors College.

ADVANCED PLACEMENT (AP) EXAMINATIONS

You will need to complete an AP course offered by your high school to take an AP examination in a particular subject. Most school districts in Texas offer these examinations in May. For homeschooled students or students whose schools do not offer AP, the College Board does not require you to complete an AP course before taking an AP examination. Specify code 6481 to have your test scores sent to our admissions office. Here is a breakdown of the available AP courses and examinations, the semester credit hours that can be earned, and our course equivalent.

CLEP SUBJECT EXAMINATIONS

These examinations are scheduled throughout the year at college and university campuses. They are open to anyone but require a fee. To find out where CLEP subject examinations are offered in your city, contact your high school counselor or our testing center at 940-369-7617. Please specify code 6481 to have your test score sent to our admissions office. We will certify the examination credit if you score at or above the average national CLEP score for that subject. Certified credit may or may not be applied toward your bachelor’s degree by the dean of your school or college’s discretion.

The following are the CLEP subject examinations you may take and the maximum number of credit hours that may be applied toward your bachelor’s degree with acceptable scores on the examination. International Baccalaureate (iB)

We award a minimum of 24 semester credit hours if you complete the IB program and receive the IB Diploma, which requires a minimum score of 4 on all of the tests. If you complete an IB program but do not earn the diploma, you can receive college credit by scoring 5, 6 or 7 on the higher level IB exams. Credit is awarded as listed in the chart below.
