Scholarships available for writers conference

DENTON (UNT), Texas -- The Dallas Morning News is offering five minority student scholarships for the Mayborn Literary Nonfiction Writers Conference of the Southwest in July.

The inaugural conference, sponsored by the University of North Texas Mayborn Graduate Institute of Journalism, will take place July 22-24 (Friday evening through Sunday afternoon) at the Hilton DFW Lakes Executive Conference Center, located at 1800 Highway 26 East in Grapevine. It is open to all persons interested in exploring the art of nonfiction writing -- including narrative storytelling and factual narration. Guest authors and editors will present lectures, discuss their works, answer questions and conduct workshops during the conference.

The Dallas Morning News' five minority student scholarships will cover the $250 conference fee and accommodations at the Hilton DFW Lakes for the nights of July 22 and 23. The conference fee includes dinner receptions on Friday and Saturday and lunches on Saturday and Sunday.

"This conference is significant, because it seeks to keep alive the great storytelling traditions of American journalism -- a tradition, by the way, that is as relevant today as it has ever been," said Bob Mong, editor of The Dallas Morning News.

The conference's guest authors include Los Angeles Times staff writer Sonia Nazario, winner of the 2003 Pulitzer Prize for feature writing for "Enrique's Journey," her series of articles about a Honduran boy's perilous search for his mother after she had migrated to the United States. HBO plans to turn "Enrique's Journey" into a six-part miniseries.

Oklahoma author Hannibal Johnson, who writes about African-American history in his state, is another guest speaker. Johnson's works include "Black Wall Street -- From Riot to Renaissance in Tulsa's Historic Greenwood District;" "Up from The Ashes -- A Story About Community" and "Acres of Aspiration -- The All-Black Towns in Oklahoma."

Other guest authors are Susan Orlean, author of "The Orchid Thief" (the basis for the film "Adaptation") and "My Kind of Place: Travel Stories for a Woman Who's Been Everywhere;" and Paul Hendrickson, author of "Sons of Mississippi," winner of the 2003 National Book Critics Circle Award for Nonfiction and the 2003 Chicago Tribune Heartland Prize for Nonfiction.

Minority students enrolled in a high school, community college or university are eligible to apply by sending a one-page letter explaining why they want to attend the conference, a writing sample not to exceed 1,000 words and two reference letters. Submit applications to the Mayborn Writers Conference at P.O. Box 311460, Denton, TX, 76203-1460.
